An abandoned palace in the old town is an unforgivable negligence
Arūnas Gelūnas, who took over the command of the Lithuanian National Art Museum more than a year ago, was very saddened and surprised by the Radvilių Palace Museum department: the ruins left over from the Soviet era, the abandoned courtyard and the infrastructure of this important historical place. “It was painful for me, as it was for Maironis for Trakai – ‘a tear bathed his cheeks.’ However, at the same time, the idea of the enormous potential of this palace is gratifying, ”said A. Gelūnas.
Restore the original 17th century. the palace project will no longer be successful: the architecture has changed too much, valuable features from other periods have emerged, some parts have been completely destroyed. However, it is hoped that in time a sensitive, conceptual and at the same time exceptional quality architectural solution will be found, which will help to combine the broken parts into a harmonious whole.

The curator of the exhibitions faces a very creative challenge to unite the art of protest (with the collection donated by V. Tarasov at the forefront), world art collections, tribal art. It is planned to establish the National Center of Photography, consider the possibility of paying tribute to Lithuanian design and install commemorative rooms dedicated to the art collections of the Radvilas family.
It is planned to install a patio near the Radvili Palace for events, suitable access for the free time of citizens and guests. The possibility of installing an underground public space that would connect all the buildings in the complex is also being considered.
