A monument to the partisans of the Dainava district was officially unveiled in Alytus, Old Town Square, on Monday, the day of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Although a big event was planned today, the quarantine and rampant virus had to be limited to a small mention.
“As the current situation in Lithuania and in the world is as it is, we had to analyze it with great responsibility and care. The planned grand event had to be abandoned. We had promised the partisans that this monument would be unveiled, presented to the public, and we fulfilled our promise.
Thanks to those people who are free today, they fought for our freedom. And the monument was built the way the partisans wanted to see it. Although modestly, it was finally officially inaugurated, ”said Nlyijus Cesiulis, the mayor of Alytus, who along with Deputy Mayor Jurgita Šukevičienė laid flowers at the monument.
The city chief, happy that last year council members finally unanimously agreed where the monument should be, and after so many years of waiting, real work has been done.
“I hope that this monument also reminds young people, future generations, of what we are free, why it has been fought,” said the mayor.
According to the Lithuanian Center for Studies on Genocide and Resistance (hereinafter LGGRTC), the question of the location of the monument to the Dainava district supporters and the project of the monument itself has been discussed by the public and government structures. since 1997.
Alytus City Council in 2019. August 19 adopted a decision “On the monument to the partisans of the Dainava district in Alytus”, which allowed to commemorate and build a monument to the supporters of the Dainava district in the Town Square Old, Alytus, and voted in favor of the budget of the project developed and implemented.
The Dainava District Partisan Monument was built in 2020. September 24 Alytus Old Town Square. Then his environment was managed.
The grand festive event of the inauguration of the Dainava district partisan monument is scheduled to take place in 2021. on May 21, when the country celebrates the Day of Respect for Partisans, Army Unity and Society.
