“The false accusations based on widely publicized fictitious statements cover the real goal of efforts to remove him from office: to turn this last bastion of memory of Lithuania’s freedom struggles and defense of history into a submissive tool for implement the Kremlin’s history policy in Lithuania. The goal of the LGGRTC is to openly designate a person “who is not willing to participate in the wars of historical memory”, under whose leadership the Center should help establish at the official state level in Lithuania the Second World War propagated in the former USSR and promoted by Russia today An interpretation of the history of the June Uprising, the tragedy of the Holocaust and the postwar partisan movement,

According to the initiator of a rally, prof. Vytautas Radžvilas, Emanuelis Zingeris publicly stated that the director of the Center should be removed to review the evaluation, awards and perpetuation of the participants in the freedom struggles.

“In short, there are already threats to commemorate plaques and monuments to freedom fighters. The ground is being prepared for Lithuania to condemn the June uprising and thereby justify the occupation. The nation simply cannot passively observe this deal with Adam Jakubauskas and, after attracting him, also with the history of Lithuania’s freedom struggles, “says V. Radžvilas.

“The situation is unique: supposedly due to disagreements between the manager and the employees, Seimas himself steps in and decides whether the manager can remain in office. This is an obvious case where the rulers want to deal with an official appointed by the The old majority and look for any excuse to do so. Generally speaking, it is a confrontation. There are even false rumors that Jakubauskas will have contacts with the Kremlin, when in fact he could not visit Russia for many years. All the most prominent anti-Soviet resisters, as well as political prisoners and deportees, Freedom Fighters organizations, the Union of Lithuanian Scientists and up to 61 employees of the Genocide Center itself expressed their support for Adas Jakubauskas. But the Seimas rulers do not care about all this, only the facts that justify the planned agreement ”, emphasizes Vytautas Sinica, another initiator of the rally.

The National Association invites all patriotic organizations that are not indifferent to the topic of Lithuanian history to join the rally.

The Freedom Prize winners Nijolė Sadūnaitė, Jonas Kadžionis and other participants in the freedom struggles are also inviting the rally.

ELTA recalls that at the end of January the staff of the center approached the Spokesperson for Seimas, concerned about the actions of the LGGRTC leadership. The speech noted that LGGRTC employees are concerned about the underestimation of historical science, directing historical research in the direction of ideologization and politicization. It was noted that the LGGRTC leadership encourages the public to participate in the “defense of history” and the “wars of memory.”

Employees also expressed concern that the center has a tense emotional climate and that pressure from management is forcing experienced historians to leave their jobs. Indignation was also expressed by the director of LGGRTC A. Jakubauskas, and Vidmantas Valiušaitis, senior adviser, journalist, publicist and book author who has already resigned. His competence to fill this position was questioned. After the tensions, V. Valiušaitis announced that he had resigned from his current position.

A. Jakubauskas was appointed director of the center in 2020 at the end of June.
