“The State Language Inspectorate supervises the application of the Law on the State Language and the resolutions of the State Lithuanian Language Commission regulating the use of the language and its regularity. Article 23 of the state language stipulates that all public registrations must be correct ”, Polina Ruginienė and Monika Blaveščiūnaitė, founders of the small community Make-up Studio, which runs the Špaklius beauty salon, recently received such a letter.
It claims that, after inspecting the studio’s outdoor advertising, it was found that the inscription “Špaklius” does not conform to the standards of the common Lithuanian language.
“Correct the violation before this year. Notify the State Inspectorate for Languages in writing on November 3”, – a letter signed by the Chief Inspectorate Audrius Valotka is required.
How 15 minutes M. Blaveščiūnaitė, one of the founders of Špaklius, said that the email with the requirements was received only one day after the Inspection made the situation public on his Facebook account.
Entrepreneurs first learned of the name of the study thanks to the commission.

And in fact, on the last day of September, the CPI’s Facebook account records that the word “spit” is an unusable strangeness, which should be replaced by the word “putty.”
“It is the jargon of the so-called makeup. The State Patent Office database indicates that this mark cannot be registered (see notice). Let’s look at this word from a non-legal point of view: “sponges” are clever, they are rooted in everyday use, it is a language game. But there is a problem: this public sign on Naugarduko street is illegal, it is not coordinated with the Vilnius city municipality. For this reason, the company managers have been instructed to eliminate this violation, ”says the language inspection.
After receiving many negative comments on this post, the Inspection edited it 11 times.
“The previous version was a bit rougher, it was edited to be smoother and more beautiful,” said M. Blaveščiūnaitė.
Hall representative: agreed with the Municipality of Vilnius City
He was surprised by such a statement from the province, as it was agreed with the municipality of the capital before the registration was published.
“We view our small business with great responsibility. Last year we contacted representatives of the municipality about the signage. Since our sign is on the inside of the window, it is not in complete conflict with the Advertising Law. Everything is legal and coordinated with the municipality ”, he emphasized.
P.Ruginienė added that the only thing the municipality asked for was to paste stickers announcing that a beauty salon was located here, that was done.
After the Inspection’s statement, the businesswomen again petitioned the Vilnius City Municipality and received reaffirmation that they had not committed any violations.
“The word ‘spit’ is not the same as the word ‘deaf’. In this case, it is a real noun that faithfully reflects our current activity: we are a make-up studio ”, emphasized M. Blaveščiūnaitė.
According to her, the only problem with the name “Špaklius” is that it is not registered by the State Patent Office.
“Our patent application was rejected simply because the word is useless alienation. The word “putty” should be used. We coordinate patent matters with attorneys, “he said.
The president of the CPI, A. Valotka, on Friday 15 minutes He said that so far the emotions on the subject are very straight and we must wait for them to subside. Therefore, he does not comment on this topic yet, but promised to do so in a week.
