They say that there are a number of buildings in the regions where illegal accommodation can be housed, but they are not owned by the municipal administrations. The vast majority of these buildings are in the hands of the Government or the ministries.

“By assessing the urgency of the problem and trying to contribute to solving the problem of accommodation for people who illegally cross the border between Lithuania and Belarus, we confirm that the municipality is ready to continue cooperating if decisions are made to house those people in the municipality, but not on municipal property, in buildings, ”writes Saulius Petrauskas, deputy director of the municipal administration of the Lazdijai district, in a letter to the Government and the Ministry of the Interior on Monday.

“There are a number of buildings in the regions whose infrastructure fully satisfies more than the basic requirements for the accommodation of such migrants. They do not belong to municipalities, they belong to ministries or government agencies. illegal immigrants, since most of these buildings, which are a kind of recreational base or training center for public institutions, have all the infrastructure. However, there are no such premises in the subordination of municipalities, except public ones, like schools ”, says Ausma Miškinienė, Vice President of the Association of Municipalities of Lithuania, Mayor of the Municipality of Lazdijai District.

The Lazdijai district municipality had the biggest test over the weekend to accept the flow of accommodation for illegal immigrants.

Currently, 72 illegal residents have been housed in the premises of the Kapčiamiestis basic school. Throughout the weekend, workers hired by the municipality maintained the facilities of the former Kapčiamiestis children’s home “Židinys”.

All illegal residents of the Kapčiamiestis school must be transferred here no later than Wednesday.
“Now is not the time to calculate how much investment it will cost us: there is no water, the pipe is scratched, the sewage system is not working, the electrical installation is being relocated because the clean cables are barking.

We sold this building, but so far we have not received investors. Now we are urgently trying to fix at least a minimum to guarantee at least basic comforts for the detainees, “said Lazdijai Mayor A. Miškinienė.

He is pleased that the Minister of the Interior, Agnė Bilotaitė, who arrived in Kapčiamiestis on Sunday, promised the local population who attended the meeting that the Government will reimburse future expenses related to accommodation, meals and the care of illegal immigrants .

The people of Kapčiamiestis did not spare the Minister any angry words. He stumbled both from “a hollow wall where it is clear to everyone that they didn’t install cameras because cigarettes are flying” and from an “unreasonable leap in foreign policy.

“All the buildings, which are owned by the municipality, are actively used for their intended purpose or do not even meet the basic hygienic requirements (lack of water, access to the bathroom, toilet) and the investment and time required to adapt them. During the weekend, we temporarily prepare the old premises of the children’s home “Židinys” in Kapčiamiestis, but there are problems with the supply of drinking water and sewage. We have shaken, in popular terms, the buildings that are standing in all the elders, and we have found, in our opinion, the most acceptable solution that would be the quickest for the ministry to resolve. In turn, we will contribute to the protection of illegal immigrants, logistics, medical and social services, ”said Ausma Miškinienė, mayor of Lazdijai district.

The politician says there are excellent facilities in the area that can accommodate up to a couple hundred illegal people at any one time.

Those premises are the dormitory of the former Veisiejai Business and Technology School, which has now become a branch of the Žirmūnai Training Center.

The building is owned by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports.

“The mentioned bedroom could be suitable for accommodation, as there are four floors, the number of living rooms is 44, there is a centralized water and sewage supply, the facilities are extensive, there are all conditions for immediate accommodation of individuals, single people and families. It is important that there is a functioning canteen next to the dormitory building, which could ensure uninterrupted cooking, so that there are no food delivery and transportation costs, and human resources can be redirected to other issues “Said the mayor. Government.

The SBGS Varėna team was also informed by phone about the offer.

“I was surprised when this message was received with the accusation that the municipality is moving away from solving the problem. As you leave On the contrary, we point the finger at the ministry, under which there are premises to which illegal people can be transferred at any time. If those premises were municipalities, they would already be occupied on Friday, without bringing them illegally to the classes of the existing school, ”said A. Miškinienė.
