The most terrible outbreaks in Lithuania: one of them could not be stopped for more than two months, one life after another

Justina Petravičienė, Public Information Specialist of the Vilnius Department of the National Center for Public Health (NVSC) for the portal Delphi I was happy: finally, it seems that the largest chimney recorded in Lithuania during the two pandemic waves will be extinguished in the Blinstrubiškės welfare home in the Raseiniai district.

The fireplace was on fire for several months.

The first cases were registered in the Blinstrubiškės welfare home on September 22, the last case was registered on December 3. Before that, the new case was only registered on November 24.

“This is such an exceptional outbreak, where it lasted so long and which was the largest fixed in Lithuania”, J. Petravičienė did not hesitate.

A total of 223 cases of COVID-19 disease were confirmed in the Blinstrubiškės welfare home. Twelve infected people died in this outbreak.

There were no major outbreaks in Raseiniai

J. Petravičienė noted that the situation in Raseiniai is now generally calmer. For a time, there were almost no cases in this city.

“Now there are cases again, but we do not register large chimneys. We have a sewing company where there are such cases, but the situation is basically that it is not getting worse, ”said the NVSC specialist.

J. Petravičienė noted that there are no outbreaks as large in Raseiniai as in the hospital, the police and the municipality of this city.

“We had a lot of major outbreaks there at the same time. Everything in Raseiniai started with a family vacation. Then the children started going to schools. From the schools, somehow, the virus reached families, people went to work. So we had big outbreaks in the police, in the hospital, we saw great connections between people communicating in the immediate environment.

Then we had a very large outbreak in the municipality. Now we don’t have big outbreaks there, ”said J. Petravičienė, adding that only a few cases were recorded in the chimney of the Raseiniai sewing company last day. There are also isolated cases.

Despite the fact that the largest foci in Raseiniai have been extinguished, this municipality remains among the top ten municipalities most affected by the coronavirus.

Outbreaks in Kėdainiai are concerning

At present, the Kėdainiai district municipality is much more concerned about NVSC specialists, where there are even some huge, clear chimneys. One of them is in the Kėdainiai Hospital, with about 130 cases of infection. There were also outbreaks in companies as large as UAB Dotnuva Baltic, AB Lifosa, Dotnuva Nursing Home.

“We had those significant numbers in Kėdainiai, because there were 30 and 40 related cases of infection, which basically determined that increase in the statistics themselves.

The Kėdainiai region is not large, but when the population is divided by the number of cases, the morbidity rate in Kėdainiai becomes twice as high as in Lithuania. And the Lithuanian average is already high ”, pointed out the interlocutor.

The situation in Šiauliai is stable

The situation is bad in both Panevėžys and Šiauliai. In the latter city, as J. Petravičienė said, the situation is stable.

“If we look at the Telšiai region, the county, then one day there is a bit of that respite and then there are more cases of fluctuations. And Šiauliai is a region where we can actually see that the infection is stable in a pretty bad situation, to despite the measures that have been taken, “lamented the NVSC specialist.

In addition, the jump in cases in the Alytus region is very large, although only isolated cases were registered in this city in September.

The situation is also bad at Telšiai Regional Hospital, where new cases are registered every day, which also worries epidemiologists a bit.

“Of course, we have chimneys in the prison: in the Vilnius prison, where we have identified 12 cases of infection, and in the Kybartai sector of the Marijampolė prison. There, the specific characteristics of the institutions themselves make it difficult to treat This generates certain signs of anxiety because it is not so easy to deal with an infection of this type when you enter certain institutions, “said J. Petravičienė.

How do so many people get infected?

The interlocutor said that the chimney is considered inactive when there are no cases in it for 28 days.

“We are often asked how many people are infected. This is because the disease has a very long incubation period. If you have been doing something for 14 days, visiting 15 stores, meeting friends, relatives of loved ones, friends from a kindergarten, celebrating a birthday, it is very difficult to say where you could catch it from all the people you visited.

As a result, the continuation of some outbreaks is very long, since the disease itself has a very long incubation period. This is probably the most important message for people on why it is necessary to reduce mobility and contact numbers, since then it is very difficult to trace where it was infected and what may have infected.

Therefore, people must take preventive measures and minimize the number of people they communicate with, ”explained J. Petravičienė.
