Tomas Kaukėnas, leader of the Sochi and Pyongyang Olympics, who again showed good sporting form, became the team leader. In the third stage, he registered even a fourth time, only behind the Norwegian Tarje Boe, the French Simon Desthieux and the German Arnd Peiffer.
The performance of T. Kaukėnas, who did not turn a single circle, used no extra ammunition and slipped quickly, can be considered the most successful start of any Lithuanian biathlete in the relay overall.
In the 4×7.5 km competition, our team consisted of Karolis Dombrovskis, Vytautas Strolia, T. Kaukėnas and Maksimas Fominas. The Lithuanian team used 8 additional rounds in the competition and lost only to the Germans and Italians.
K. Dombrovskis finished 18th in the first stage, V. Strolia held this position in the second stage and T. Kaukėnas elevated the team to 12th place. M. Fomin, a member of the youth team, although he lost two positions, perfectly coped with the fallen responsibility: the applicant received a single hit while lying down and hit all the targets while standing.
“It just came to our knowledge then. Oberhofe had a very hard feeling, couldn’t shoot and broke the baton, and this time I made up for it. It was interesting and enjoyable riding on good skis, shooting and feeling good. Today’s start is Oct 10. every 10, those days are rare. In the relay, I don’t remember appearing better. For the first time in my career, T. Kaukėnas was happy with the performance.
At the beginning of the season, the athlete contracted a coronavirus, which caused a deterioration in his athletic form, he remained in only 100 and 104 positions on the stages in Hochfilzen (Austria). During the holidays, T. Kaukėnas trained in Estonia and performed successfully in the Lithuanian Championship there.
In yesterday’s personal 20km race, the biathlete reached his season record of 55th. If it weren’t for three inaccurate shots in the last section of the shootout, the Lithuanian would have been in the top 16.
“I feel great, but the skis also glided very well, which can be a bit misleading. When the skis are good, psychologically it is much easier and you feel better. Skiing means many things, which can sometimes compensate for the lack of well-being, you just need less alcohol, smiled T. Kaukėnas. – Of course, and the form a little better. We are in the mountains, apparently those camps that took place in the highlands in summer have paid off. I feel much better in the mountains than those who have been less here ”.
The winners of the competition were the French: the victory was snatched by Emilien Jacquelin, who overcame the season leader, the Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Boe in the last meters. The latter were 0.8 seconds behind and the Russians in third place were 50.8 seconds behind.
The Lithuanian team was 5 minutes away from the winners. 28.2 sec. Teams from 24 countries participated in the competition.
Next week, Lithuanian biathletes will participate in the European Championships in Dušnika Zdruj, Poland. Meanwhile, the World Biathlon Championships will be held from February 10 to 21 in Pokliuka, Slovenia.
“At the party, the height will be similar to Antholce’s, roughly the same. There will be no special preparation for the championship because there is not much time. We are only going to go to the mountains to adapt to the heights, but it is difficult to do anything else during the week between the European Championship and the World Cup. Italy has brought positive emotions and is happy that the World Cup is at a similar height. My body will probably function well again and it will be possible to expect better results than before, “T. Kaukėnas expected.
