The new Lithuanian startup Viezo won second place in the largest sustainable energy competition in Central and Eastern Europe “EIT InnoEnergy 2020 PowerUp!”. It was surpassed only by Estonian start-up Woola.
This year, a record number of participants, 360 holders from 20 countries in Central and Eastern Europe, competed for the top prize and future investment opportunities, according to the report.
Innovative Lithuanians
This year, the Lithuanian representatives of Viezo earned 10,000 euros by introducing new types of materials that allow energy to be generated from vibrations and thus replace batteries in industrial equipment. The electricity generated by vibrations can power wireless Internet sensors, extending their operating time and increasing the number of signals.
“We spread the word about ourselves and we feel great. The competition was very high and the winners were really strong. Therefore, we do not believe that we have lost, we have turned out really well ”, says Donatas Ponamariovas, representative of the emerging company Viezo.
The competition is held for the sixth consecutive year and is Lithuania’s second starter among the winners of this competition, in 2018. The Lithuanian team WellPark also ranked second. They proposed an artificial intelligence algorithm solution to obtain real-time parking information and thus reduce traffic congestion and CO2 emissions.
The defeated Estonians
Estonia became the winner of the Central and Eastern European start competition. At the sixth organized competition, Woola received a check for EUR 50,000 and the opportunity to join the EIT InnoEnergy business acceleration program.
This startup was established in 2019. and produces packaging materials from sheep wool waste. The new Estonian company aims to change the e-commerce market by significantly reducing production, consumption and the amount of environmentally damaging materials, such as Styrofoam and plastic in landfills.
The product is ecological, shock resistant, heat resistant and compostable. Every year, there are 135 tons of sheep wool left in Estonian landfills, so Woola has decided to use this source accordingly.
In selecting the winner, the jury focused on the potential of the ideas and solutions submitted to the competition, their successful implementation on a global scale, as well as opportunities for long-term improvement of promising products and services.
“The selection process was very complicated as all newcomers came up with many fantastic products and solutions. This year we saw the team’s greatest potential at Estonian Woola. We are excited to see the team’s work in the future as well, ”said Oksana Prykhodko, Innovation Manager at DTEK and a member of the jury.
Third place and a € 5,000 check went to Pocket Virtuality of the Czech Republic, which found a solution in the field of engineering, medicine and smart cities to contact an external expert who sees a virtual view of the environment and can provide complete remote assistance.
Record number of participants
This year’s PowerUp! by EIT InnoEnergy has reached a new stage. The largest number of participants in the entire history of the event was attended by more than 360 participants from 20 countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
Of these, only 14 starters competed in the grand final of the competition, as did Lithuanian “Viezo” representatives.

It is especially important for small businesses, so it is gratifying that established companies are willing to contribute to the business creation movement. Even during the event, a lot of interest was maintained online and the headlines did not give up. From the record number of participants, we can conclude that the challenges only take us further.
