We walked through the Antakalnis and Rasai cemeteries. In them are the tombs of the most prominent Lithuanian personalities.
The people described in one way or another deserved Lithuania. We invite you to see how the Lithuanian elite are honored after death.
ANTAKALNIS CEMETERY
The Antakalnis Cemetery in Vilnius was founded more than two hundred years ago, in 1809. Originally, there were four separate cemeteries for the burial of soldiers, orphans, WWI victims and lay people. Today, the cemetery is solid.
In addition to the groups of people already mentioned, the victims of the tragedy of January 13 and Medininkai, politicians, artists and other deserving people from Lithuania are buried here.
Algirdas Brazauskas
Algirdas Brazauskas was the first President of Lithuania to restore its independence. Born in 1932. In Rokiškis and died in 2010. In Vilnius and is buried in the Antakalnis cemetery. He has been president since 1993. until 1998
The monumental bust was inaugurated in the Antakalnis cemetery one year after the death of A. Brazauskas.
Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas
Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas was the commander and general of the Lithuanian partisans. He was born in 1918 and died in 1957. In Vilnius. In 2018, his remains were found in the Vilnius orphanage cemetery, and that same year they were reburied in the Antakalnis cemetery, very close to the grave of A. Brazauskas. Already in 2018, A. Ramanauskas-Vanagas was recognized by the Seimas as head of state of Lithuania.
Vytautas Kavolis
Vytautas Kavolis was a sociologist and public figure. Born in 1930. In Kaunas, and died in 1996. In Vilnius. After the start of the second Soviet occupation, he went to Germany with his parents. He studied hard and earned a doctorate in sociology from Harvard University. He taught at Harvard and Taft Universities and had a professorial degree. A few years before his death, he traveled from the United States to Lithuania and taught in Vilnius and Kaunas.
Zigmas Zinkevičius
Zigmas Zinkevičius was a linguist, dialectologist, public and political figure. He was born in 1925 and died in 2018. He worked as a teacher at the Lithuanian Language Institute of Vilnius University and at the Vilnius Pedagogical Institute, was a doctor of philological sciences and created textbooks. From 1996 to 1998 he was Minister of Education and Science.
Justinas Marcinkevičius
Justinas Marcinkevičius was a Lithuanian poet, playwright, translator, and public figure. He was born in 1930 and died in 2011. VU studied Lithuanian language and literature and worked mainly on Lithuanian subjects. He is best known for his trilogy Mindaugas, Katedra, Mažvydas, which talks about the formation of the Lithuanian state. This work of the poet is also included in the list of literature that students must read.
Buried together with his wife Genovaite Marcinkevičienė.
Marcelijus Martinaitis
Marcelijus Martinaitis was a poet, essayist, translator, and public figure. Born in 1936. In Raseiniai district and died in 2013. In Vilnius. Mainly created the theme of the old rural worldview facing the encounter with the modern world. He has published ten collections of poetry in his lifetime. The Raseiniai Marcelijus Martinaitis Public Library is named after him.
Ieva Simonaitytė
Ieva Simonaitytė was a writer. She was born in 1897 and died in 1978. Due to her work, she is known as the most famous representative of life in the Klaipėda region in Lithuanian prose. In memory of the writer, the I. Simonaitytė Memorial Museum operates in Priekule. It is located in the writer’s summer house.
Janina Degutytė
Janina Degutytė was a poet and created poems for children. He was born in 1928 and died in 1990. He began writing poems at the age of ten. He graduated from Vilnius University and was a specialist in Lithuanian language and literature.
Jurga Ivanauskaitė
Jurga Ivanauskaitė was one of the most famous of the 20th century. pab. – XXI a. pr. Lithuanian writers, artist, traveler. He began writing at school, publishing his first poems in a school newspaper. Graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts. When she got cancer, she loved to travel, there are a lot of travel elements to her job.
Vytautas Kernagis
Vytautas Kernagis was a Lithuanian musician, poetry creator and performer, director, and television host. Born in 1951. and died in 2008. In Vilnius. He is considered the pioneer of singing poetry in Lithuania. 1978 he recorded the first poetry singing album in Lithuania. He has composed around 200 songs in his life.
Vytautas Sapranauskas
Vytautas Šapranauskas was an actor, TV host and comedian. Born in 1958. and died in 2013. In Vilnius. He studied at the Lithuanian State Conservatory. He worked for TV3 on television for a long time. He presented the shows “Shapro Show”, “Great Show”, “Dance with Me”, “Choir Wars”, “Golden Onions”.
Virgil Noreika
Virgilijus Noreika was an opera soloist and teacher. He was born in 1935 and died in 2018. He taught at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater. He has been active both in Lithuania and abroad, and has received numerous awards for his work.
RACING CEMETERY
Vilnius Rasai Cemetery is considered one of the most important cemeteries in Lithuania. Here lie famous Lithuanian intellectuals, teachers and artists. The cemetery was established in 1801. Currently there are two parts of the Race Cemetery: the old and the new. Rasai Old and New Cemeteries are separated by Sukilėlių Street.
Jonas Basanavičius
Jonas Basanavičius was a public figure, editor, scientist and doctor of the first Lithuanian newspaper Aušra. He was born in 1851 and died in 1927. Graduated from Moscow University. He was interested in and researched Lithuanian history, Lithuanian language and culture, and dealt with popular education.
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was a composer, choir director, painter, and cultural figure. He was born in 1875 and died in 1911. Best known for his music and artwork. In memory of MK Čiurlionis, the National Museum of Art MK Čiurlionis operates in Kaunas, and in Druskininkai is the Memorial Museum MK Čiurlionis.
Balys sruoga
Balys Sruoga was a poet, prose writer, theatrical and playwright. He was born in 1896 and died in 1947. He studied literature and folklore. They took him to the Stutthof concentration camp, near Gdańsk. Due to his competition in the camp, he worked in an office. After leaving camp, he taught at VU. He later wrote a memoir, The Forest of the Gods. He has published a total of 14 books in his life.
Povilas Višinskis
Povilas Višinskis was a Lithuanian writer, director and political figure. He was born in 1875 and died in 1906. He worked in the press, promoted Lithuania. He wrote to Ūkininkas and Varpas, and later edited these newspapers. Together with Gabriele Petkevičaite-Bite in 1899. In Palanga, he directed the first Lithuanian performance “America in the Bathhouse”.
Mykolas romeris
Mykolas Romeris was a professor, legal researcher and creator of constitutional law. He was born in 1880 and died in 1945. Lithuania fostered, he worked in pedagogical scientific work. He has published numerous monographs and works. Mykolas Romeris University is named after him.
Mykolas, Vaclovas and Viktoras Biržiška
Biržiška was the nobility of Samogitia.
Mykolas Biržiška was born in 1882 and died in 1962. He was a historian of Lithuanian literature, a signatory of the Act of Independence.
Vaclovas Biržiška was born in 1884. and died in 1956. V. Biržiška was a cultural historian, political figure, lawyer, encyclopedist, and teacher.
Viktoras Biržiška was born in 1886 and died in 1964. He was a mathematician, politician, and public figure.
The entire Rasai cemetery of Biržiška is buried together.
Kazys boruta
Kazys Boruta was a writer, poet, political figure. He was born in 1905 and died in 1965. He knew the language, literature and history of Lithuania. He worked at the Institute of Lithuanian Literature, preserved Lithuanian manuscripts, and protected the works of Adam Mickiewicz from destruction. Boruta also helped save the Jews. Kazys Boruta gym is named after him.
