The group stage of the World Hockey Championship ended this Tuesday in Riga (Latvia), after which the participants of the quarterfinals were announced.

In survival match B, for the first time in this championship, the Latvians stayed alive after two quick goals lost at the start of the match. 1: 2 (0: 2, 1: 0, 0: 0) had to recognize the advantage of the German team and put an end to the championship fights.

This defeat by the Latvians saw the German and Canadian teams advance from third and fourth positions in Group B to the quarter-finals.

Already in five mutual encounters, the Latvian team has never beaten German hockey players in the world championship.

The Germans started the game in a fantastic way when they scored in seven minutes John peterka (3:16) and Marcelis noebels (6:40) and advanced 2: 0.

Later, the Germans twice and the Latvians an offensive, but neither team took advantage of the quantitative advantage.

In the third half, the Latvians put pressure on their opponents, they even played twice in the majority, but couldn’t take advantage of it. 1 minute left to play. 46 sec. the Latvians replaced the goalkeeper with the sixth player from the field, but even this did not save the field hosts, who had to recognize the advantage of the German team.

The Latvians used the quantitative advantage in this championship only 2 times out of 24 attempts and this is the worst result among all the world championship teams.

In this match, the Germans scored 21 goals, while the Latvians scored 24.


At the same time, in Group A, the team of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) 6: 0 (5: 0, 0: 0, 1: 0) crushed the Belarusian team and beat the Swiss in Group A and took first place.

Starting today, vaccinated or COVID-19 fans could also take part in the Latvian championship match.

The 16 national teams participating in the World Cup are divided into 2 groups of 8. The top 4 teams from both groups reached the quarterfinals. This year, no national team will be relegated to the lower division, like the First Division Championship in 2020-2021. They were canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic.
