Dr. Audrius Vaitkus, who determines such student choice, believes that opinion about studies can be influenced by being difficult and uninteresting. However, according to him, it is quite different: updated programs are creative, allowing you to express yourself freely while studying and contribute to the development of technologies.
“Students working in research centers and university laboratories during the free study process contribute to the development of new materials and technologies, actively participate in nature research programs investigating Lithuanian roads. A significant number of road engineering students leave each year for one or two semesters to study at a university in another country. International and national experience becomes meaningful through applied science and practical work ”, says prof. Dr. A. Vaitkus emphasizes that the study programs are updated annually and the theoretical knowledge acquired goes hand in hand with technology.
“The VILNIUS TECH Bachelor and Master degree programs from the Department of Roads are updated almost every year. In many cases, these updates are related to the emergence of new knowledge, technologies and materials and the need to convey science-based information to future engineers. In the study process, we implement elements for the acquisition of practical skills, when in addition to the productive practice other forms are applied, for example: specific problems formed by various asset managers, construction or maintenance companies, whose solution is implemented in the form of teamwork in auditoriums and specific objects ”, says the interlocutor.
Not only flexibility, freedom and creativity are important for the current and future student, but also the opportunities after graduation in one field or another. According to the representative of VILNIUS TECH, Road Engineering Studies provides a comprehensive knowledge of the construction sector and specific knowledge of the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of roads and streets, as well as the digitization and automation of all processes. Graduates of these studies successfully consolidate the knowledge acquired in Lithuanian and international companies. General engineering education allows easy understanding of processes in other areas of engineering. As for road engineering graduates, most of them have completed their undergraduate studies by specialty and continue their master’s studies occupying key positions. This shows the high competence of young engineers and the high demand for various engineers in the market.
“Road engineering has been, is and will be important on a global scale. Even with the creation and development of private jets and the full implementation of autonomous transport technology, the road infrastructure, whatever its form, will remain: “The structure will have to be constantly updated, modernized and adapted to changing forms of transport. by highway. More and more young people choose not to study and dedicate themselves to the first year after school to find themselves and start working without fear of changing jobs, thus choosing an area in which they want to deepen both theoretical and practical knowledge. Also, as a rule, higher education is chosen by people who are already working, which makes universities particularly flexible in terms of conference schedules.
Šarūnas Jakūbaitis began his studies already working as an engineer in “Road Maintenance. To obtain a higher qualification and with the support of the employer, he entered higher education. According to him, the university adapted to his work schedule and created an individual lecture schedule.
“I chose part-time studies according to an individual plan, so I didn’t have to worry about combining work and studies. I was also impressed by the flexibility and support from the teachers, ”he says.
The engineer notes that studying on the job is much easier because he understands the principles of the specialty, and teachers encourage those who are already specialists in their field but want to improve their qualifications.
“It is much easier to study and work in the same field, because listening / reading theory compares everything with existing practice. During the lectures, the professor even mentioned that it is difficult for students without practice to understand the subject being taught, which is evident for those who work in the field of roads ”, Š. Jakūbaitis.
We often imagine a student working, in a hurry everywhere, and constantly unpredictable. Šarūnas says that this image is outdated and there is enough time for everything, and the free afternoons don’t disappear anywhere: “My workday starts at 7 pm in the morning and ends at 4 pm After work I prepare for the lectures and I write assignments, I do homework. I’m free from 6.30pm and I can spend time in my free time. “
The salary of this specialty is determined by the results of the employee, the professional opportunities are very wide, the average salary of the engineer position is about 2000 euros.
Modernity, robotics and digital design
For a long time, road engineering has been about more than just drawing, building, and maintaining roads. It is about the search for modern solutions to problems, the development of communications and the implementation and management of the latest technologies.
“In my opinion, the world will soon take another step forward in road construction, and in a few years we will see more and more robotic mechanisms and robots on the roads. In this way, a growing number of information sciences are constantly integrated into road engineering studies, beyond the elements of digital design and BIM. This means that the existing need for specialists in this field will only grow ”, concludes prof. Dr. A. Vaitkus.
