“Two Islamic State militants have managed to attack a rally of judges and researchers at the Afghan government graduate of Kabul University,” said ISma’s Amaq propaganda unit.
“The two combatants attacked the graduates with automatic weapons … and then clashed with the security forces,” who were guarding the ceremony, as well as the reinforcements sent, added ISIS.
Monday’s attack, organized as violence escalated in Afghanistan, was the second attack in less than two weeks against educational institutions in the capital.
Surviving witnesses to the events recounted horrific scenes when around 11 pm local time (7:30 am Lithuanian), a mortal exploded in the university complex, and then two other attackers began to hit with machine guns.
The Ministry of Public Health reported that at least 22 people died and the same number were injured. Authorities said most of the victims were students.
It is not yet clear how the attackers were able to bring weapons into the compound while those arriving on campus are being screened.
Officials indicated that an investigation into the incident had been launched.
Afghan security forces, with the help of US troops, were only able to kill the attackers a few hours later and declared the attack ended.
Hamid Obaidi, a spokesman for the Higher Education Ministry, said the attack began shortly before the opening ceremony of the Iranian-Afghan Book Fair, which would take place at the university complex, to which senior government officials were invited.
