On Wednesday morning, alarmed Kaunas residents began flocking to the kauno.diena.lt portal because many students were walking dangerously on the roof of the Waldorf school on Šiaurės avenue.
Kaunas residents shuddered
The Waldorf school is surrounded by apartment buildings, so Kaunas residents can see the courtyard and roof from the windows.
“This morning, looking out the window, I saw a photo that took away the promise. A whole squad of students walked across the roof of the school. From what I could see they weren’t supervised, only later did an adult join, probably a teacher, ”said Šarūnė, the first woman from Kaunas to call the portal kauno.diena.lt.
At the same time, another man who lives in the neighborhood of this school saw the same image.
I look through the window and my body horrors! What is an excursion here?
“I look through the window and my body suffers! What is an excursion here? Where the eyes of the teachers! Children may be in third or fourth grade and still lack much attention. Each other ran to the edge, ran again. What if someone had fallen! The irresponsibility of school leaders and teachers is incomprehensible. I myself have children and it is even difficult to think that someone would walk on the roof of an educational institution “, – Arvydas, a citizen of Kaunas, did not spare the arrows of criticism.
Not only did the man look at this image in horror, but he also didn’t forget to capture it. The video posted to the kauno.diena.lt portal shows that about 20 students walk across the entire roof area. Because the image is captured at a considerable distance from the school, it is difficult to understand whether students are alone or supervised by adults. Therefore, we decided to ask the director of the Kaunas Waldorf School.
Special program
After receiving a question about the disturbing image of the residents of Kaunas, the school principal Vilma Šlentnerienė did not bother.
This is a special program for fourth graders that lasts a few minutes.
“I was with these students myself, we just came down from the roof. This is a special program for fourth graders, which lasts a few minutes ”, the director of the educational institution began to comment on the images that horrified many witnesses.
He explained in a calm tone that there were 24 students on the roof learning the world. Yes, according to V. Šlentnerienė, children are encouraged to explore the environment in which they live.
“Students explore their country in this way: first, the classroom, the school, then the city. As a result, they were allowed a few minutes to see the city from above. We believe that this knowledge of their country will help them respect it. love him and take care of him ”, affirmed the interlocutor the purpose of such a program and added that the children have total security.
During the interview, the director also mentioned that the coronavirus made some adjustments to the normal learning process, but did not need to change it substantially.
“In our school, teachers always approach students, they only need to change classes themselves in exceptional cases. Therefore, we are already used to this procedure. Of course, special preparation required flow management, as we are used to being very open to parents, family members and other visitors. At the moment, all contacts are limited, so it is a bit unusual for us, that we especially promote the community both inside and outside the school ”, mentioned V. Šlentnerienė at the end of the conversation, thanking the opportunity to spend more time outdoors with students.
