The head of the Šeškinė polyclinic suspected in the police investigation was removed from his post

“Following the request made by the prosecutor’s office and in accordance with his instructions, we dismissed the head of the Šeškinė polyclinic,” Povilas Poderskis, director of the Vilnius city municipal administration, told reporters.

According to him, D. Kanopienė was removed indefinitely.

According to P. Poderskis, Narimantas Markevičius, the director of the Vilnius City Clinical Hospital, who had received suspicions, also wanted to be removed from his post, but he went on leave and was therefore not removed.

“He managed to take a vacation (…) such a situation arose,” said one of the capital’s leaders.

According to him, N. Markevičius went on vacation on Thursday morning for several weeks.

Poderski says the municipality will allocate additional capacity to the Vilnius City Clinical Hospital for COVID-19.

“It is very important to us now that the COVID-19 treatment and management processes in Vilnius do not stop. The Vilnius City Clinical Hospital is known to be the largest hospital treating COVID-19 in Lithuania and we must ensure its continuity and improvement of work processes ”, said P. Poderskis.

“We will probably add additional capacity there,” he added.

He stated that the Šeškinė Polyclinic is one of the capital’s most important medical institutions related to vaccination, so the aim is to ensure a smooth process.

“Polyclinics, including Šeškinė, are vaccination institutions. The Šeškinė polyclinic was planned for vaccination at mobile points, which will also ensure the continuity of this process,” said the director of the Vilnius city municipal administration.

On Thursday, law enforcement agencies reported allegations that companies trading in medical equipment may have illegally won purchases from various Lithuanian medical institutions for more than 3 million. euros. Currently, the investigation raises complaints of various crimes of corruption against 35 people, four of whom are heads of private companies and six are heads of medical institutions.

Among the suspects are the director of the Vilnius City Clinical Hospital Narimantas Markevičius, the director of the Šeškinė Polyclinic Daiva Kanopienė, the chief physician of the Nemenčinė polyclinic of the Vilnius district Olegas Kačanas, the director of the Kėdainiai Stasys Skauminas hospital, the director of the municipal health center of the district of Plung Anta Antanas Martusevičius and Radv.

Virginijus Domarkas, director of the medical equipment company Limeta, member of the Kretinga District Council, former parliamentary social democrat, as well as Kęstutis Kutkauskas, director of the company Limeta NT, a shareholder of both companies, were also suspected in this investigation.

Erland Sudeikis, chairman of the board and shareholder of Graina, a company that also markets medical equipment and is based in Panevėžys, was also suspected.

According to the STT, more than a hundred crimes are being investigated. It is suspected that they may have involved more than a dozen medical institutions from different municipalities, their managers and other people responsible for public procurement.
