As Rasa Jakilaitienė, representative of Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, informed BNS, the Cabinet of Ministers “will decide the duration and conditions of the continuation of the quarantine, and will also consider the proposals on the use of masks.”
Currently, the quarantine in Lithuania is valid until February 28. The Government’s Council of Experts said Tuesday that it would recommend an extension, but did not specify a specific period.
Experts also suggested that the government relax the requirements for wearing masks outdoors, but no longer allow the use of cloth masks or shields.
According to experts, the masks should be used in open spaces only when there are other people at a distance of two meters. The requirement to wear masks indoors would not change.
According to Mindaugas Stankūnas, member of the Council of Government Experts, professor at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, it is proposed to force the population to wear only medical masks or respirators, since the effectiveness of cloth masks, shields and other similar measures to stop the spread of the virus is very low.
Protection of the nose and mouth is currently mandatory in all public places for people over six years of age. These can be masks, respirators, or other means. Exceptions apply for the disabled, athletes, or outside residential areas.
