There have been even more unaccounted for deaths in Lithuania than the government has announced so far. It turns out that there are almost 1,200, this is the information provided by Robertas Petraitis, director of the Center for Public Health, who decided to comment on the situation for the first time. He argues that the center is not to blame for this, it is the ministry and the hospitals that do not provide information on time. It is true that experts point out that it is a simple incompetence.
There are almost 1,200 dead missing in Lithuania
Every day dozens of deaths from coronavirus are registered in Lithuania. Yesterday, according to statistics, Covid-19 claimed the lives of 27 people. However, it is becoming clear that not all deaths are included in the statistical tables as the numbers increase. If the government announced a couple of weeks ago that it had found more than 800 missing dead, the figures for December 30 are even higher.
“I can say that this discrepancy is 1171 cases. Of these, 441 deaths from Covid and 636 cases from other causes,” said R. Petraitis, director of NVSC.
According to the head of the National Center for Public Health, it is not clear if more than 600 have died from Covido or have already recovered and died from other causes. R. Petraitis justifies that it is not he and the staff of the center who are to blame, but the hospitals that are closed to patients and do not send all the data. He blames the director and the ministry for filling out new document forms for staff since January 1.
“These discrepancies have shown that the problem is not just NVSC, it is a systemic problem. (…) It is very strange when an institution takes data from an institution, publishes it and then it is no longer clear who publishes what, who has to comment on what data is published ”, says the head of the NVSC.
The director is not hiding, it is possible that the center will not receive all the data on deaths: “Yes, if you do not send, then we do not have cases that night and we do not have today.”
Today, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė and Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys do not comment on R. Petraitis’ statements. However, the director has previously received criticism from the Cabinet of Ministers and experts for his inability to control the statistics. Vaidotas Zemlys-Balevičius, a member of the Council of Health Experts, says the problem was scheduled in the spring, when the government ordered hospitals to send data to the center on a daily basis, although all the information is in the electronic health system.
“Here we have the inability of an institution, or two, NVSC and SAM, to streamline data processes at the beginning of a pandemic. (…) It is natural that hospitals fail to fill up, there is additional bureaucracy, it is natural that the process has started to stagnate, ”said V. Zemlys-Balevičius.
In the coming weeks, the accounting for the deaths of Covido will be in the hands of the Department of Statistics.
“The Statistics Department will take over, it will take the data from electronic health, where the data has always been and will normally be ordered,” said V. Zemlys-Balevičius.
And since he had never seen the need to speak about these issues before, and the director of the Center for Public Health, who appeared in public for the first time during the entire pandemic, said if he was determined to resign.
“I want to assure you that if the shortcomings of the institution or my personality are identified, I will definitely take that responsibility,” Petraitis said.
The government has extended control of the movement for another month: officials are changing tactics
At that time, the view of the roads at the entrances to the cities would probably not change for a month, although, according to the original plan, the police had no longer checked the drivers since tonight.
The government meeting at the meeting decided that the checkpoints would remain until the end of January, with the possibility of being canceled by mid-month if the pandemic situation improved. The Interior Minister explains that this was due to expert recommendations.
“It just came to our knowledge then. We cannot do it, because it would be a crime to think about the life and health of our people,” said Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė.
“We are also witnessing an increase in deaths. These are indicators of concern. We cannot say that the situation is improving much,” said chief epidemiologist Loreta Ašoklienė.
In less than three weeks, there were as many people as there were people living in Šiauliai: about one hundred thousand. By the way, the officers will change tactics.
It turned out that drivers tended to travel to other cities on weekdays when there were fewer checkpoints. Therefore, now the government and the police will not announce on which days the officers will work at full capacity.
“Many people just want to go to the store, even if it is necessary. There are, they say, the gas station, although here there are gas stations too.”
It is true that tomorrow, the Minister promises to consult with the authorities and possibly free access to nearby municipalities in municipalities and districts.
At that time, the Ministry of Health announced that tomorrow the third batch of coronavirus vaccine with at least 20 thousand doses would arrive in Lithuania.
