While some praise the idea of an immunity passport so that residents with it can have the opportunity to attend events, travel and return to pre-quarantine life. Others criticize possible discrimination or data security.

On Friday, the Freedom Party held a debate on the soon-to-emerge immunity passport, which would provide more opportunities to return to the normal period before the pandemic.

Vytautas Mitalas, vice president of Seimas and a member of Freedom Faction, points out that the vaccine passport cannot create a precondition for classifying people.

“It is important that there are not two classes of society, that there is no classification of people and that the data is used in a safe and proportional way only when it is necessary. When there is a necessary service, let’s say you buy medicine, it is natural that everyone has the right to do it ”, teaches V. Mitalas.

Opportunity to return to a normal life.

Ieva Pakarklytė, the largest of the Freedom Faction, is considering that the immunity passport could open the door to unnecessary services and entertainment. This would improve the emotional well-being of the population.

“The purpose of the passport is to return to a normal life, to bring joy and better emotional well-being. The clearest area of possibilities, where we would see the application of the passport, would be massive events: concerts, performances, cinema, sports competitions with spectators, not cut-out models ”, teaches I. Pakarklytė.

According to her, in order for a passport to appear, it is necessary to start mass vaccination. The immunity passport, in the opinion of the politician, would solve the feeling of injustice that had existed for some time, when it was forbidden to travel to Lithuania and go on vacation to Egypt.

“The feeling of injustice has been huge until now, when you can’t walk through Trakai Castle, but you can fly to the Maldives or Egypt.

Mass vaccination is also very important, because we are still talking about when it will be here, the deadlines vary depending on the number of vaccines that are now available. Yes, not everyone who wants to register yet, but we are close to that and perhaps with certain vaccines it would be possible to do so ”, comments I. Pakarklytė.

The idea of an immunity passport is not new.

Morgana Danielė, a member of the Seimas Health Affairs Committee, recalls that the idea of a passport or certificate of immunity is not new. It was one of the first to be offered by prisons.

“It just came to our attention then. Prisons already suggested in November, for long-term visits, that people who are already sick can take the test or show some kind of certificate and can see for a longer time.

This is not an idea born at the political level. Also commercial establishments have been offered for a long time. It is becoming a mass dissemination idea and some countries are already implementing this solution.

It is important to understand why we are where we are and why we are not talking about closure, destination at home, lack of family visits. We no longer have the narrative that we had a year ago. Because the situation is dynamic. A year ago, when it all started, we took restrictive measures, everyone did it and it was worth it ”, remembers M. Danielė.

The politician also agrees with Mital and maintains that essential services should not require an immunity passport.

“I think one of the key concepts is the need for services. We certainly don’t have to apply the passport rule of immunity when services become essential. This does not mean that a person cannot function in society without that passport ”, says M. Danielė.
