The first ladies of Lithuania and Poland visited the old town of the capital, Vilnius University

At the meeting, the first ladies of Lithuania and Poland paid special attention to the memory of the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund Augustus, whose 500th anniversary is commemorated this year. On this occasion, Diana Nausėdienė and Ms Agata Kornhauser-Duda visited places related to this important historical figure for both nations: Vilnius Old Town, the Basilica Cathedral and Vilnius University ”, the President’s report reads.

At Vilnius University, the First Ladies received exclusive exhibits from the library: works and manuscripts of people important to the history of Lithuanian and Polish culture and science, such as historian Joachim Lelevelis, former university students, poets Adomas Mickevičius, Julius Slovackis.

They also inspected one of the 14 books of Sigismund Augustus with ornate superexlibris kept in the Vilnius University Library.

In addition, D. Nausėdienė and A. Kornhauser-Duda visited the room of the historian, cartographer Joachim Lelevelis, where a very valuable collection of cartography was presented to the guests: unique old maps copied by the historian himself.

According to the Presidency, this is the first visit by officials to this room after the restoration works.

D. Nausėdienė and A. Kornhauser-Duda also visited the Sanctuary of God’s Mercy, which attracts pilgrims from all over the world.

Polish President Andrzej Duda and his wife arrived in Lithuania on Tuesday for a two-day visit.
