The country has begun mass vaccinating children ages 2 to 10, and health officials announced that locally produced vaccines are safe for young children.

“Our country would not allow even the slightest risk [vaikų sveikata]if it is not proven that the vaccine [jiems] safe and highly effective, “Aurolis Otano, director of the Vedado University Hospital, told AP at a vaccination center.

According to her, with the spread of delta strains of the pandemic coronavirus, the incidence of younger people is increasing, so the Cuban scientific community decided to conduct “clinical trials of the vaccine” and it was approved for children.

The university hospital hopes to vaccinate about 300 children between the ages of 2 and 5. Children ages 5 to 10 are vaccinated at schools.

In Cuba, adolescents between the ages of 11 and 18 have been vaccinated in the previous weeks. As planned, they should be given two doses of Soberana 02 and one dose of Soberana Plus, as in adults.

The COVID-19 outbreak in Cuba is not coming to an end, almost destroying the country’s health system. Provinces such as Matanzas, Siego de Ávila and Cienfuegos have received support from doctors from other parts of the country and from international donors.

In addition to the two Soberana vaccines, Cuba has developed the Abdala vaccine.

According to the Ministry of Health, 776,125 cases of COVID-19 and 6,601 deaths from the disease have been registered in the country.

In June, Chinese authorities approved the use of Sinovac and Sinopharm in children ages 3 to 17. The United States and many European countries currently allow vaccination of children over 12 years of age.
