The decision of the Minister of Transport and Communications Jaroslav Narkevičius to fire Vitalijus Andrejev, the head of the Lithuanian Highway Administration (LAKD), seems like a political agreement, this step raises even more doubts about the activities of the minister, says the Presidency.
“The minister’s decision to remove the leader appears to be a political agreement,” the country’s spokesman, Antanas Bubnelis, said on Friday.
“According to the president, this step raises even more doubts about the minister’s activities, and at the same time casts a shadow over the entire government,” he added.
The president’s spokesman recalled that in mid-June, Gitanas Nausėda vetoed amendments to the Highway Law and related laws that provide for the transformation of LAKD into a state-owned company.
“The president vetoed the provision of the law on the politicization of LAKD’s management. However, no law will help if the Minister’s actions continue to demonstrate legal nihilism, which is tolerated to preserve the ruling coalition in its current composition,” he said. Bubnel.
By order of J. Narkevičius, V. Andrejev, the head of LAKD, was dismissed from his post on Friday. According to the Ministry, that decision was made to guarantee the smooth and efficient operation of the institution.
V. Andrejev intends to appeal the Minister’s decision to the court.
The Transport and Communications Minister accused V. Andrejev of politics, lying and degrading the ministry’s reputation on Thursday due to road repairs.
The LAKD chief denied the allegations and claimed there was no conflict with the ministry.
At the end of May, the Seimas allowed the transformation of the Highway Directorate from a budgetary institution to a state company.
