The construction of the Kleboniškis (A. Meškinis) bridge under construction in Kaunas, which fell on Wednesday afternoon, injured five workers and killed one of them. Kauno Tiltai, who is doing the work, says he does not yet know the causes of the accident and calls it the darkest day in the company’s history.

Edita Zdanevičienė, representative of the Department of Fire Protection and Rescue, reported that during work on the construction site, the scaffold had fallen and the metal structures had fallen. Upon arrival, firefighters took some people out of the structures and released the oppressed people.
According to the latest data, a person pressed by a metal structure died, two people suffered serious injuries and were transferred to a medical institution. Two more people suffered minor injuries.
Special services are working on site, all work on site has been suspended.
The reconstruction of the bridge is carried out by the Kauno Tiltai company. Aldas Rusevičius, the director of the company, says he is shocked by the event.
“This is the darkest day in the history of the company, and the entire Kauno Tiltai team is extremely shocked by this event. We express our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased colleague. We communicate with its members. We will provide them with all the Possible assistance and support to them and other workers affected by the disaster and their families. We are cooperating with the services investigating the event “, – says A. Rusevičius in the comment sent by VŽ.
According to him, a special task force is being created in the company to investigate the disaster, which will evaluate all the circumstances of the incident.
“It is not yet possible to name the reasons for this disaster. We emphasize and ensure that we will take all measures to prevent this type of disaster in the future,” says the director of Kauno Tiltai.
According to data from the State Labor Inspectorate (VDI), during 2020, it received 33 reports of work-related events that resulted in the death of employees. Compared to 2019, the number of these events decreased by 6 cases. The number of reports of workplace accidents affecting the health of seriously injured workers remained the same at 125.
Last year, there were 6 deaths and 24 serious injuries in the construction sector.

Reconstruction of the transportation hub
The Kleboniškis bridge over Neris is part of the A1 motorway. During the reconstruction, a new bridge will be built over the Neris, a viaduct over Jonava Street and a connecting road.
The previously announced construction of a new bridge and viaduct over Jonavos Street, along with the connecting road installed on the right side of the main road, is scheduled for completion in 2021. The total value of the works is 32.34 million . EUR.
These structures, as well as the arrangement of the bridges, are part of the ongoing Iceland highway project. This is the busiest stretch of road and bridges in Lithuania.
The traffic intensity on the section of highway A1 from the Biruliškės junction to Via Baltica, which includes the aforementioned bridges, is estimated to average 68,000 cars per day.
