The collapsed barracks in Kaunas will be renovated Business

The project is being implemented with state funding by NATO’s Acquisition and Support Agency (NSPA), the Ministry of National Defense (MoD) informed BNS. It works for 6 million. The Estonian company Merko Lietuva, which won the NSPA tender, will make one billion euros.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the roof of the disused building has collapsed, is in a state of emergency and does not comply with hygiene standards. After the renovation, the barracks will continue to operate there. The building is registered in the register of cultural values.

“To preserve, adapt and use this building for its intended purpose, it is necessary to carry out construction and repair works,” the ministry said.

Merko Statyba and NSPA signed an agreement in late June. Preparatory work is currently underway and construction is scheduled to be completed in August next year.

The renovated barracks were built in the early 20th century as part of the Kaunas Fortress, where the second infantry battalion of the Tsarist army was located. After the restoration of independence, the building was handed over to the Lithuanian Armed Forces, several units were located in it, and in 1923-1940 the Military School functioned.

According to the Ministry of National Defense, more work is being carried out on the territory of the barracks, financing them for Lithuania and the US Workshops and garages, warehouses are being repaired, in addition, it is planned to build roads and improve heating networks.

The projects are being implemented under the European Deterrence Initiative Fund 2020-2021, for which the US is allocating around 4.2 million. euros.
