Kaunas residents and city guests can already see the birth of the main symbol of Christmas – the city’s main Christmas tree reminiscent of a sweet fairy tale. The green scarf formed by the many branches adhered to the metal frame has already begun to be decorated.
The work, which began at the end of last week, will continue until Saturday, when the fir will be lit. Due to the announced quarantine, the rapidly spreading coronavirus pandemic, this year the celebration of the Christmas tree will not be held in the town hall square, this traditional attraction will be moved to the virtual space.

The festive concert, which will take place in the Žalgiris Arena without spectators, will be broadcast on television and the Internet, during which everyone will be able to safely see how the fir tree of the city is illuminated. Monique, Vidas Bareikis, Jazzu, Justinas Jarutis, Saulės kliošas, The Roop, Saulius Prūsaitis, Martynas Kavaliauskas and Girmantė Vaitkutė are announced to present their most famous works.
“The main symbol of Christmas in Kaunas is recreated by the author of unique Christmas trees, artist Jolanta Šmidtienė. His ideas and works annually surprise and delight Kaunas residents and visitors to the city. Last year, the brightly colored “cosmic” decorations that dominated the Town Hall Square will be replaced by motifs from a Christmas fairy tale. Fir will be completely different, but traditionally charming and festive.
The year was difficult, so let’s make Christmas in Kaunas quiet and easy. This is also reflected in this year’s motto: “Sweet, sweet Christmas in Kaunas”. The bright colors will return to the Town Hall Square, and the activities and entertainment that took place here will move from the Christmas village to the virtual space and the citizens’ house, ”said Kaunas Deputy Mayor Mantas Jurgutis.

J. Šmidtienė revealed that the inspiration for this year’s Christmas symbol came to her unexpectedly. At home, admiring the morengi, he drew attention to the beautiful texture of the dessert. Of course, the textile artist believes that sweets are an integral part of the holidays, especially in the context of these days when people spend a lot of time at home.
“I wanted to create something that was sweet, light and fragrant at home. We tried to extract different textures and finally we discovered one that was especially reminiscent of morengo or whipped cream. Now this is where the Kaunas Christmas tree is born, ”said the artist.
