This is the second coin in the series of commemorative coins dedicated to the ethnographic regions of Lithuania. The first coin dedicated to Samogitia was issued last year.
“From now on, not only Samogitians, but also Aukštaitians will be able to enjoy a commemorative 2 euro coin. Aukštaitija is the largest ethnographic region in Lithuania, the cradle of our statehood, famous for its variety of dialects, customs, culinary heritage and natural beauty. By the way, this is not the first euro related to Aukštaitija; we have issued a commemorative 2 euro coin to commemorate the recruits, who are originally from this region, “says Asta Kuniyoshi, vice president of the board of the Bank of Lithuania.
In the prospectus issued together with the coin, dr. Žilvytis Šaknys remembers that Aukštaitija is famous not only for its contracts. The Compendium of Intangible Cultural Heritage Values includes the roasted beer from the Jūžintai region, the ancient lobster catch and celery in winter at Lake Baltai Lakaji. Aukštaitija is famous since 1905. the ongoing Sartai race. Rokiškis flax was known outside of Lithuania. Many ethnographic sources also testify to the hospitality of the Aukštaitians.
On the occasion of the issuance of the Euro Aukštaitija, the Bank of Lithuania, together with the Aukštaitija National Park, is organizing a contest for residents: treasure search for “Get to know Aukštaitija and win a commemorative coin!” The invitation to participate in the contest and its conditions will be published soon on the Bank of Lithuania website and on your Facebook account.
On the national side of the coin dedicated to Aukštaitija, the panel shows an armored horseman holding a raised sword in his right hand. The shield of the coat of arms is supported by two angels, who symbolically exalt and protect this important region of Lithuania. Below is the inscription in Latin: PATRIAM TUAM MUNDUM EXISTIMA (Consider your Homeland as the whole world). The author of the national side of the coin is the artist Rolandas Rimkūnas. The common side of the coin is the same as that of the € 2 circulation coins.
The coin is issued to Aukštaitija in a circulation of half a million pieces, of which 5,000 pieces. – BU quality in a special numismatic package. The price of a BU quality coin is 9 euros. Unc quality coins are exchanged for denominations at the Bank of Lithuania cashiers. The coins will also reach the wallets of the population through the points of sale and will be used for daily payments.
Until 2023 2 euro commemorative coins will be issued to other ethnographic regions of Lithuania: Dzūkija, Suvalkija and Lithuania Minor.
