Georg Ratzinger was hospitalized in Regensburg, Bavaria, where he lived. He was a priest and previously directed the children’s choir in Regensburg Cathedral.

Benedict XVI’s 93-year trip to Regensburg was described last month as a “private visit” after his brother George’s health deteriorated. It was the first trip of the pope emeritus outside Italy after his unexpected resignation in 2013. After his resignation, the pope’s emeritus had left the Vatican only once, to the popes’ summer residence near Castel Gandolfo in Rome.

During his visit to Benedict XVI in Germany, Clemens Neck, spokesman for the diocese of Regensburg, said that “this may be the last meeting of the brothers in this world.”

Benedict XVI is believed to have not visited Germany since 2011.

Pope Benedict XVI, considered a nurturer of the traditions of the Catholic Church, surprised the world by announcing his resignation from the position of the Holy Father for health reasons. He became the first pontiff to resign in 600 years.

Former pope Joseph Ratzinger now lives in a small monastery in the Vatican and avoids appearing in public.

His trip to Germany was announced after a number of EU countries opened their internal borders to ease the quarantine imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
