The Achilles heel of epidemiologists: personal celebrations: how to have fun not to light a new fireplace?

“5 cases are related to diseases that are still being registered these days after the personal vacations that took place in the Vilnius and Širvintos districts. This is the Achilles heel of the epidemiologists of the last days. These cases do not stop registering every day. 4 cases are related to a personal celebration in Kernavė, 2 celebration participants and 2 are those who had contact with the celebration participants, ”said NVSC representative R. Lingienė.

Another recorded case is also from a celebration in the Vilnius district, Kalveliai village.

Of the 15 participants, 7 were diagnosed with coronavirus at the festival in the village of Kalveliai. Another 8 people were diagnosed with COVID-19 who did not attend the celebration but had contact with the participants of the celebration.

“This study requires a particularly large effort from epidemiologists, it is very extensive, more than 150 exposed people have been identified, around 80 have been isolated, but this is not the end, because, as you can see, the cases are still being recorded “said R. Lingienė.

According to the NVSC representative, the participants in this celebration were found to be very active, with many contacts in the workplace and other spaces.

“It was established that they worked for UAB Vilniaus Pakuotė, Magneta Logistics, Vilnius Marcinkevičius Hospital, VIP Spauda and others. These are large companies with many employees. A person who was diagnosed with COVID-19 attended a wedding celebration after the birthday celebration. There were 46 people at this celebration, ”said R. Lingienė.

According to the NVSC representative, the celebration took place in Kernavė on May 30. Eight individuals participated, of which 6 were already confirmed with coronavirus, as well as 2 related diseases. Preliminary data identified 36 exposed individuals. These are family members, friends and employees of various institutions in the Širvintos and Ukmergė districts.

How to celebrate safely?

“What should be done, what to do if some kind of celebration approaches?

I strongly recommend following the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and postponing this vacation, if possible, for a later time, – said R. Lingienė.

– If this is not possible, then, of course, follow the general guidelines: limit the number of people to those without whom the celebration cannot take place, assess the risk of participation of people with chronic diseases and the elderly. To exclude from this celebration people who must isolate themselves or who show signs of upper respiratory tract infection. Hygiene (hand washing, hand disinfection, coughing, sneezing and the like) is also very important in this case. “

NVSC representatives said that whether the conditions for personal celebrations will be stricter will depend on the epidemiological situation.

“Currently there are no requirements for holidays. Currently, the Ministry of Health has provided recommendations on how to organize celebrations, – said R. Lingienė.

– These are only recommendations, but we all understand that even during the holidays, such recommendations are not easy to follow.

Potential risks should be assessed and, if acceptable, organized, and if we cannot postpone the celebration, we recommend postponing them. Because, you see, two celebrations and what are the consequences and the virus spreads. Examining this fireplace in the village of Kalveliai alone, it has become clear that so far more than 150 people have been in contact, some 50 are isolated. Both these people’s work and plans are completely unexpectedly interrupted: they didn’t go anywhere, but they had contact, and that really affects their lives. “
