In March last year, Ekaterina’s family suffered a terrible tragedy: Karen was attacked by her grandfather’s dog and seriously injured: “In Santariškės, she was barely saved. There are many injuries that need to be treated, so complex operations are needed that no one in Lithuania can do, ”says the boy’s mother.

Ear reconstruction operation performed
Most recently, Catherine and Karen spent up to two weeks in Germany, where the boy underwent his first ear reconstruction. Both before and after the operation, he underwent examinations and after the operation, the doctors did not allow him to move too much, so the two recently returned to Lithuania.
“We have been in Germany for two weeks and she is a stranger to us. It costs not only the operation, but also the flights and the living; even a bottle of water at the airport costs three euros,” says Karen’s mother.
The first operation cost a really significant amount: 12 thousand. euros and that’s not the end. In total, ear surgery abroad will cost 40 thousand. euros.
Jekaterina is glad that the operation was a great success: everything planned was done. Well Karen was delighted that after the operation in Germany, she would not have to pull the stitches, her entire insides were disintegrating so even those 4 freshly made scars are not terrible to cut.
“Doctors in Lithuania did not have enough experience for this, because a child with such injuries appears in Lithuania once every two years. In Germany, the ear was restored from the cartilage of the ribs, ”says Jekaterina.
Now in Germany, Karen has not only undergone her first ear reconstruction operation, but has also had tissue transplanted into her right eyelid. In total, the operation lasted 6.5 hours. The first operation is currently underway, with four in total. The date of the next operation is September 29.
The goodness of the people has become a miracle
When Karen recovered her ear from the cartilage of her ribs, the boy had to open her chest. According to her mother, this makes Karen physically sensitive, sometimes she feels pain, but all this is redeemed by the emotions she experiences.
“The day he stopped needing painkillers and he stopped suffering, and he realized that his hearing was back. It is even difficult to know what I felt when I saw his look and that happiness.
Everything changed immediately. Children cannot tell how happy they are with their eyes. He took me by the hand and said: Mom, finally. He didn’t have to say anything more, and the ground began to slide under my feet. “As I called this operation, it is the beginning of the end,” says Catherine, breaking down tears hard.
Not know what to do
Karen’s story has touched thousands of people. During the “Compliance Campaign”, even the evening’s hosts, Marijonas Mikutavičius and Renata Šakalytė, had a hard time hiding their tears while listening to their mother’s story.
According to her mother, in the event of an accident, she did not know what to do and various thoughts swirled in her mind.
“I started looking for prices on the internet and at the time I was not really thinking about the Compliance Campaign. I started to get interested, to see the prices and finally I was even interested in organ transplants: I wanted to sell something myself, donate something to help to get money for the surgery and was able to continue caring for the child. So the “Compliance Campaign” has become a real miracle for us, “says Jekaterina.
Karen’s treatment is very expensive, so all possible help is very important, and the “Compliance Campaign” helps pay for very expensive surgeries.
Previously performed eyelid surgery
Karen had two eyelid surgeries in March. Karen’s eyelid is operated on at the Santara clinics by surgeon Karolis Baužis. The same doctor participated in the surgery that saved the boy’s life. Mother Jakaterina is extremely happy with the connection between the doctor and Karen, she says that the pleasant communication between the child and the surgeon helps to endure painful procedures:
“So far, what is happening in the hospital is just a fairy tale. Karen is not afraid of the hospital and became close friends with the doctor. When we get to take out the stitches, and they also have to be taken out without anesthesia, the doctor says when we arrive: “Karen, I’m ready for our meeting” and takes the rubber pack out of his pocket. And chewing gum is Karen’s favorite candy.
He was very happy to have received those sweets and somehow, having spoken with the doctor, he endured that difficult procedure. When they left, they hugged them again, clenched their fists. We were very lucky with the doctor, just a fairy tale, and we have been a lot of doctors, but this one is special. Karen’s procedures are not really easy, so the presence of a nice and good doctor really helps, “the boy’s mother said in March.
About the compliance campaign
The “Compliance Campaign” has been running successfully since 2003. Over all these years, people of good will have donated close to 10 million. Euros. For the donated funds, medical equipment, medicines, surgeries, rehabilitations and better living conditions for hospitals and children were purchased. In all, more than 180 extremely seriously ill patients were helped during the campaign, some of whom were literally resurrected.
The funds raised during the campaign are used not only to treat single children, but also to buy medical equipment needed by hospitals, which is used to solve the health problems of many children.
