The 170-ton bridge was transported to Jonava overnight in six trucks: part of the road marking had to be dismantled

The pedestrian bridge over Žeimių street will connect the residential district of Kosmonautai and the Jonava sports stadium, the Joniniai valley, the city stadium and the swimming pool under construction on the other side of the busy street.

The bridge was designed by the Šiltas namas company, the author of the bridge concept was Professor Gintaras Čaikauskas and the Architektūros linija company, it is being built by AB Kauno tiltai. The value of the project is almost 2 million. 260 thousand euros.

The opportunity to begin construction of this bridge arose with government funding.

A route study was conducted

The six trucks that left Kretinga on Sunday evening reached Jonava only on Tuesday evening. On Monday morning, the highway had to stop and continue travel late on Monday night, when car traffic had dropped significantly.

To ensure smooth transport of the bridge, a detailed study of the route of about 250 kilometers was carried out and it was decided to temporarily dismantle 15 traffic signs in Kretinga, Rietavas, Raseiniai, Kėdainiai district and Jonava.

How 15 minutes said the mayor of the Jonava district Mindaugas Sinkevičius, The bridge, manufactured at the Steel Bridges plant, had to be cut into eight sections, the heaviest of which weighed about 50 tons, before being transported to Jonava.

After reaching Jonava, a 500-ton crane lifted separate parts of the bridge on temporary supports.

“Here, on site, it will be reassembled as a kind of Lego construction. Since its individual pieces alone weigh from a few dozen to over fifty tons, both its journey from Kretinga to Jonava and its installation on site is a It would be a serious engineering task. I know that during the transport works it was necessary not only to dismantle the traffic signs, but also to remove individual columns in some places, “said M.Sinkevičius.

M.Sinkevičius said that simply lifting and securing the bridge in the oversized cargo transport required creativity: “I’m kidding, it was a bit more difficult to get this load to Jonava than Ikea’s kitchen set.”

It is no coincidence that transport work was carried out at night, when vehicle traffic was minimal. When you drive on the main A1 road, there are fewer obstacles, but you drive on narrower roads, cross roundabouts and maneuver, a lot of things, ”said M.Sinkevičius.

The works required creativity

The mayor described the entire construction of the footbridge as an extremely complex process. Many works were carried out and will continue to be carried out in the place where it will be located: in Žeimių street, Jonava.

“I mean the supports on which this bridge will rest. Its installation is an important part of the entire construction. After all, a bridge cannot be tilted, the supports must withstand loads and serve for decades.

Various works related to the installation of accesses are also being carried out on site. The bridge must also be adapted for the disabled. It is made of steel. Therefore, one can only imagine the scope of metal bending and welding work during its construction, ”said M.Sinkevičius.

The bridge will be in place for at least two days, and both Jonavis and visitors to the city will soon stop using it.

“Only after the installation of the bridge structure will it be possible to complete the accesses. It will be necessary to carry out electrical works and lighting of bridges.

According to architect G.Čaikauskas, the Jonava pedestrian bridge will become an event in Lithuanian architecture. I can’t disagree with that.

It seems to me that this bridge will really attract attention, some will like it a lot, maybe there will be some who will not, but I am sure it will not leave you indifferent. Because it is made of steel trusses, this bridge will become the younger brother of our historic railway bridge, ”said M.Sinkevičius.

More than 170 tons of steel were used

Kauno Tiltai Company Transportation Infrastructure Construction Project Manager Andrius Čekanauskas He indicated that on August 7 the works of the bridge began, with the excavation of a capsule that symbolizes the beginning of the works.

As the foundations of the newly built bicycle pedestrian bridge over Žeimių street in Jonava fall over existing heat supply networks, heat supply pipes and other underground communications had to be relocated before construction of the bridge could begin.

“The new supports are installed on perforated post foundations. About 400 cubic meters were used to install the brackets concrete and about 50 tons of reinforcement.

The steel truss floor of the complex construction, double-curved, single-span bridge was manufactured at the Kretinga factory. More than 170 tons of steel were used for this. The bridge itself will be 60.85 meters long, “said A.Čekanauskas.

The project foresees that it will be able to move pedestrians and cyclists, and it will have access for the disabled.

Completion of the entire installation is scheduled for June next year.

A bridge and a connection between people

The architect, professor, who developed the concept of the Jonava pedestrian bridge Gintaras Čaikauskas says the Jonavites were offered six versions of the bridge, of which the district community chose one.

To ensure that the bridge is not only a formal communication element from point A to point B, but at the same time organically merges with the nearby Jonava sports stadium. Furthermore, it is hoped that this building will become an easily recognizable symbol of the city of Jonava.

“This bridge is definitely not a simple building. It is similar to what you want, but not a traditional bridge. I would call it a sculptural solution, which not only has a functional purpose, but also an aesthetic and even symbolic one, ”said G.Čaikauskas.

The architect says he was delighted with the city’s decision to choose exactly this among all the options offered, characteristic and expressive.

“As you know, Jonava seems to have the atmosphere of an industrial city as well as an industrial city. Next to the (bridge) there is a sports field that is also expressive in shape. The bridge fit the context,” said G.Čaikauskas.

Speaking of the bridge as a building, the architect said that everything is important: aesthetics, functionality.

“The main function of architecture is to serve the person, but it is always possible to present a functional solution in different ways.

We interpret the bridge as a critically important building with many symbolic meanings. It is both a human connection and a city, as an artery. If we look at global practice, bridges have seen a renaissance in recent years.

Less and less the bridge is understood directly as a functional object. Usually the opposite: symbolic, expressive, unconventional. New tools are being sought to transmit such a simple function: to connect with coasts or streets ”, said the architect.
