This school year, students will no longer study remotely, but in the usual way, but schools are subject to strict security requirements. However, ŠMSM reports that it is also ready to run the school year remotely.

Schools cannot give up distance education

As you know, we plan to start the school year as usual in the classroom, but we are prepared to study at a distance and alongside the educational process. First of all, to be able to manage the flow of students, and so that the educational process is not interrupted if the epidemiological situation deteriorates ”, said Jolanta Urbanovič, deputy minister of MESM, professor at the educational conference“ Investing in education and innovation: mobilizing , encourage, empower ”.

He points out that the study plans already offer the possibility of distance education in addition to general education, not only in emergency situations.

“The amendments to the general education plans stipulate that the educational process can be organized remotely, not just in an emergency. It is stipulated that for students in grades 5-8, the school can make a decision of up to 10 percent. dedicate time to the educational process to work remotely. Up to 30% for seniors and gym students, ”said J. Urbanovič.

Featured school mistakes

It is true that during the last school year, there were some gaps in the distance learning process. One of them is the uncoordinated telework platforms in schools.

“Here, two main approaches to choice emerged: student-centered and teacher-centered, when teachers could choose platforms individually. Unfortunately, this choice approach has not worked very well. Therefore, one of the main criteria in the distance education guidelines is that the school should have a unified distance learning environment, ”said the deputy minister.

Schools also applied the number of contact hours differently, sometimes simply by moving the regular schedule to digital space. The excessive workload annoyed both students and teachers.

“Obviously, such a mechanical transfer of the schedule to a remote space has had a rather negative effect on the well-being of children and teachers. It is fatigue, loss of attention, sometimes vision problems. Now the curricula anticipate and define the proportions of synchronous work, the recommended proportions of face-to-face and non-face-to-face working hours, ”said J. Urbanovič.

Finally, as the deputy minister said, during the quarantine, only a small number of educational institutions decided to change the annual curriculum at least slightly deviate from the course.

“Therefore, when planning a new school year, it is recommended that schools creatively and flexibly plan the content of education, pay attention to the possibilities of integrating subjects, organizing and conceiving distance education,” suggested J. Urbanovič.

Schools must be prepared

At that time, the Minister of Education, Science and Sports, Algirdas Monkevičius, emphasizes that educational institutions must be prepared to communicate about Covid-19 cases within themselves.

“No one will take the responsibility from us to do everything possible to reduce the risk of infection. If we can avoid infection, it will be great, but not everything depends on us. It is very important along with technical things. <...> simple thing – communication, communication plan.

If there are contagions, surely the school will not be left, it is established. If an infection occurs, the National Center for Public Health, the ministry, the operations manager get involved and we come to the rescue. But it is important that the founder thinks about how to handle the situation so that the infection does not spread, ”said A. Monkevičius at the conference.

Prepare for distance education

Before the new school year, an additional 1,850 laptops are purchased and distributed to teachers, and distance learning content is being prepared.

According to A. Monkevičius, schools have different models of the educational process, as well as the possibility of combining face-to-face teaching with distance education. Each school is expected to decide.

It is being considered that distance education could be allowed to start schools without waiting for increased risk.

At that time, teachers are trained to acquire digital skills.
