The theme of the illuminated Christmas tree in Vilnius Cathedral Square, as every year, was kept secret until the last minute. The capital, promising to be brighter than ever, kept its promise: the country’s brightly lit main spruce solemnly started the festive period.
Residents were invited to view the capital fir lighting event live on television and on the portal Delphi. Representatives of the municipality emphasize that it is important to welcome Christmas safely this year.
“Let us remain responsible in this quarantine to greet St. Christmas in the capital, which this year will be even brighter, more spiritual, more intimate. In the current circumstances, it would be irresponsible to continue tempting events when it is not possible to ensure compliance with distances or other requirements. We must be determined, because people’s health and safety is our top priority, ”said Edita Tamošiūnaitė, deputy mayor of Vilnius.
To avoid congestion, the Christmas atmosphere this year has been created in different parts of the capital. Vilnius residents and guests can admire the Old Town decorated with Christmas decorations, the trees of Lukiškės Square, the treetops of Odminiai Square, the central part of the Šventaragis Valley and the entrances to Vingis Park from Čiurlionio Street. . Vilnius residents will be able to feel the Christmas atmosphere even closer to home, as more light decorations have been moved to the districts.
This year, the city has allocated a total of about 280,000 for festive city decorations, fir and other alternative holiday ideas. euros.
Kaunas fir is reminiscent of sweets: morengi became an inspiration
“Sweet, sweet Christmas in Kaunas” – this is the motto that Kaunas welcomes the festive period, lighting a sugar Christmas tree decorated with Morengi ornaments in the Town Hall Square. Neighbors were invited to see their lighting live on television and on the portal Delphi.
Every year, artist Jolanta Šmidtienė, who surprises Kaunas residents and guests with unique images of Christmas trees, also started creating a festive atmosphere this year. After presenting a brightly colored cosmic fir tree last year, this time the artist created an atmosphere in the Town Hall Square with the soft colors of a Christmas story.
As J. Šmidtienė previously revealed, the inspiration for this year’s Christmas symbol came to her unexpectedly. At home, admiring the morengi, he drew attention to the beautiful texture of the dessert. The artist believes that sweets are an integral part of the holidays, especially in the context of these days, when people spend a lot of time at home.
“I wanted to create something that was sweet, light and fragrant at home. We tried to extract different textures and finally we discovered one that was especially reminiscent of morengo or whipped cream. Now this is where the Kaunas Christmas tree is born, ”said the artist.
According to the representatives of the municipality, the decoration of the Plaza del Ayuntamiento cost about 59 thousand. euros, Christmas tree – 78 thousand. euros. The Christmas atmosphere also prevails in the festively decorated Laisvės Alley: the decorations in it cost 75 thousand. euros.
Monique, Vidas Bareikis, Jazzu, Justinas Jarutis, Saulės kliošas, The Roop, Saulius Prūsaitis, Martynas Kavaliauskas and Girmantė Vaitkutė appeared at the fir lighting event.
Like every year, fir lighting is unimaginable without fireworks. In order for Kaunas residents to admire them without leaving home, this year it was decided to shoot them from six different locations, which will allow the majority of Kaunas residents to look at them through their windows.
