Approximately 400 students and preschool-age children study at the Dubysa Aukštupis school in the Šiauliai district, which was established last year through the merger of three district institutions. Principal Vaidas Bacys told BNS that about 12 elementary school students have come to the school so far, and about the same number of high school students have contributed to it this week.

“The little ones have studied before, the big ones this week. We have roughly the same schoolwide: approximately 12-14 elementary school students and approximately twelve students in grades 5-10. I doubt there are more, ”said the director.

According to him, the students study in the library and are supervised by social workers and teaching assistants who do not have direct lessons. Children are grouped by class.

“Everyone works with headphones if there is a problem; they raise their hands. If the assistant teacher sees that a child is stuck, give information to someone who is working with the children. Yes, some children’s parents are working, children they need the help of discipline, we organize it ”, said the director.

According to him, the institutions have kindergartens, so meals for children are served in canteens.

Egidija Vilkienė, director of the Druskininkai Morning Gymnasium, said that since Monday five children have come to school who “cannot cope with independent learning.” They are all freshmen. In total, the school has more than 500 students.

“I think fifteen or older are self sufficient enough to learn on their own, but they lack the skills. Even when we studied in a mixed way, they had difficulties because they did not have the skills to prepare the lessons, they did not have much motivation, and when learning takes place at a distance, it disappears even more ”, said the director.

According to E. Vilkienė, the children are assisted by a social educator, a librarian and one of the deputy directors. The school allows children to bring their own food, it is possible to heat it in the technology office.

“It just came to our attention then. But there is a question of how much they will have to come to school. You cannot force them to bring that person, it should be quite an extreme measure, because some children treat it as exclusive care, almost as a punishment: why do others study from home and should I go to school and be supervised by an adult? ”said the school principal.

In Kaunas, about 160, in Vilnius, 1.2 thousand. students

According to the representatives of the Kaunas city municipality, according to the latest changes of government, some 40 students have been studying remotely in schools since Friday.

Ona Gucevičienė, director of the Kaunas Municipality Department of Education, informed BNS that a recent survey found that around 160 students would need care, meals and distance education services at school.

According to the representatives of the municipality, the schools are in charge of coordinating the supervision of the students who attend them, together with the child welfare commissions to make decisions about the return of children to school.

“The doors for students who need supervision are ready to open all the schools in the city,” said O. Gucevičienė.

Alina Kovalevskaja, education adviser to the director of Vilnius city municipal administration, said that a total of around 1,100 children could return to schools from Monday.

According to her, before the government’s decision, there were around 250 quarantined primary school students, whose parents could not supervise them at home due to their work, so there will be no big changes for some institutions.

“According to the data from the child welfare commissions, there are 1,100 such children. In total, 70,000 people study in Vilnius. Students, so this is a small proportion. We will try to see who needs that help. There will be schools where they will not need it. It helps, for example, some gyms, “said A. Kovalevskaya.

He also stressed that the right to decide is left to the child welfare commissions, and not only to those who do not attend distance education and are unmotivated, but also, for example, to the children of some older children or other families who do not they can provide the child with technical learning opportunities.

Laima Prižgintienė, head of the Klaipėda city municipality education department, told BNS that there will be “about a dozen” students who will need help in schools according to the government resolution.

“It seems to me that we will be able to deal with this problem, because there are not many children like that. We collect information about how rarely join, how many do not join, what are the problems: there are units of such students in schools (…). instruction may be correct and children may have to be put under more pressure. But there were also cases where they visited the school episodically before quarantine, it is not a universal mechanism to bring them to school during the quarantine period, if parents do not care, or similar, “he said.

Association of Municipalities: preparation for decisions

Roma Žakaitienė, director of the Association of Lithuanian Municipalities, says that municipalities are willing to accept students.

According to data from educational institutions, a total of more than 25 thousand. children cannot study fully at home for various reasons.

However, he said that the mechanism to assess whether a child needs contact learning is too bureaucratic, forcing municipalities to seek faster solutions.

“It is expected that if a student does not join a lesson for the second time or on the second consecutive day, contact the educator, the educator is looking for that child, explains the situation. If the child had an assistant teacher, contact him or her, social workers, explain why the child does not connect. And only then does the child welfare commission decide that he or she urgently needs help. Then he applies to the municipality and the municipal child welfare commission makes a decision accordingly, ”explained R. Žakaitienė.

“Everyone imagined that the decision would be made the first day after. This is definitely not the case ”, added the representative of the association.

The government has eased quarantine restrictions since last Thursday and allowed students of all classes who have difficulty learning from home to return to school.

Education, Science and Sports Minister Jurgita Šiugždinienė said schools will be able to implement the decision not immediately, but gradually. As the epidemiological situation improves, he said, gradually allowing all elementary and middle school students to attend school would be considered.
