Some Coy Optimism: A Winter Pandemic: The First Bright News From Hospitals

It is thought without thinking that, if this situation persists, it will be possible to consider reducing the number of places for combat patients, and even allowing very tired doctors to say goodbye, which until now has not been possible. But the key word here is “maybe”, there is no rush to be overjoyed.

“I am very afraid, but it is unusual for me: the second weekend is approaching and there is no tension about it. There is no tension not only because of the places but also because of the personnel. Without a doubt, both the vaccination saves and the sick personnel return to hospitals and can continue working.

That makes the situation a bit easier. During that period, the doctors worked quite hard. If such a situation persists, perhaps it would be possible to think about spending a very tired number of doctors on vacation, ”said Aušra Bilotienė Motiejūnienė, Director of Management of Vilnius Santara Clinics University Hospital.

The strategist responsible for coordinating the work of the so-called cowboy treatment institutions in the Alytus and Vilnius regions said that the current situation allows a respite for both those organizing the process and for the doctors.

“We are seeing a decrease in the number of patients during the week. Currently, we have between 60 and 65 percent in the Vilnius region. Bed occupancy, in Alytus – about 60%, in Druskininkai – lower .

Resuscitation has a slightly higher bed occupancy, close to 70 percent. This is a reasonable limit when we have places, specialists, we can provide qualified and high-quality assistance, and there is no tension, ”said A. Bilotienė Motiejūnienė.

In view of the trends, the interlocutor stated that the situation is likely to remain similar next week, or perhaps improve slightly. But the health strategist cautiously shared optimism.

“We read the press, we look at what is happening in the world, we talk. There may be increases. We would think next week, after evaluating the situation, look at the situation in the regions and in general, start thinking about a certain reduction in the number of beds (for cow patients) ”, said A. Bilotienė Motiejūnienė.

The specialist immediately assured that even if this were done, this decision would be temporary so that they could reopen if necessary.

“We see countries in Europe where mutations are on the rise. We can’t say if it’s really a downward curve. There can still be everything,” said A. Bilotienė Motiejūnienė.

There are more serious patients in hospitals during the second wave

The interviewee could not distinguish an age group that had more patients in the treatment hospitals.

“There are patients of different ages. We have both patients over 75 and enough young people over 35. It could be compared in weeks, but I won’t say exactly for this week because I don’t have the data. We are not seeing a significant change, either only for younger patients or only for older patients, ”said A. Bilotienė Motiejūnienė.

However, the director of the Santara clinics for management acknowledged that during the second wave, hospitals are treating more complex patients, requiring more resuscitation beds.

“At this time, we may have become used to treating the milder forms of patients at home more freely and safely, and because the numbers were large enough, we only lied to severe and very seriously ill patients. . We have them in medical institutions, ”said A. Bilotienė Motiejūnienė.

No rush to ease quarantine conditions

As for the relaxation of the quarantine rules, the interlocutor was cautious.

“I would feel very uncomfortable and say that the situation is only now beginning to stabilize. (…) The measures are quite strict at the moment, but winter and the joys of winter, when there are enough people in the hills, do their thing.

Personally, I think that until we have a stable situation for two or three weeks, and we don’t see trends that show that the situation is really under control, it would be premature (easing the quarantine conditions). It would probably be inconvenient, but it is safe. It is safe for all of us, it is safe for society, ”said A. Bilotienė Motiejūnienė.

At the same time, he stressed that it is a personal opinion.

“I say this as a natural person who sees the situation. I’d look very conservatively at quarantine relaxation possibilities, unless … somewhat minimal, but I don’t even know what it would be. (…) In a week we will have a more realistic situation. We still do not know when it will be with the mutation, many other things. It is too early to rejoice, ”said A. Bilotienė Motiejūnienė.
