Social workers and the LLRA will have three seats in the Seimas

The representatives of the Social Democratic Labor Party Andrius Palionis, Jonas Pinskus and Zigmantas Balčytis won seats in the single-member constituencies in the second round.

In the LLRA single-member constituencies, Česlavas Olševskis and Beata Petkevič won in the first round, and Rita Tamašunienė won in the second round.

The first election did not divide the mandates of social workers

In the second round, four social workers competed to enter parliament in single-member constituencies, and three managed to beat their competitors.

The Minister of Economy and Innovation Rimantas Sinkevičius (35.19%) lost to the Social Democrat Eugenijus Sabutis (64.81%) in Jonava County.

In Dainava district, Agriculture Minister A. Palionis (60.45%) defeated Social Democrat Jūratė Zailskienė (39.55%) in the second round.

J. Pinskus, who received about 60.1 percent. the voters won against the conservative Valentinas Stundis (39.8%).

Z. Balčytis, who does not belong to the party, requested the mandate of a member of the Seimas in the Šilutė electoral district with social workers. She won (62.40%) against the conservative Sandra Tamašauskienė (37.60%) and entered the Seimas.

Two other former members of the social workers faction Antanas Vinkus, who defeated (61.1%) the conservative Juozas Mažeikas (38.9%) in Curonian Spit, and Rimantė Šalaševičiūtė, who left the party, went to the Seimas elections with the “peasants.” He did not enter the second round in a single-member constituency, but entered the Seimas on the list of “peasants.”

The ruling “peasants” On July 10, the Council of the Lithuanian Greens and Peasants Trade Union announced the termination of an agreement with social workers on the nomination of joint candidates during the Seimas elections.

Social workers from the single-member constituencies of the Seimas had nominated 50 candidates. Two ministers competed for the mandate. Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius, who is independent from the party, remained the third in the world’s Lithuanian constituency.

The social workers were formed when in September 2017 the council of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party decided to withdraw from the ruling coalition with the “peasants” and the faction split.

From mid-October 2017, the parliamentary group was renamed the Social Democratic Labor Group, and a party with the same name was soon formed.

G. Kirkilas, who did not enter the Seimas and remained the sixth in the Fabijoniškės electoral district during the first round, promised that social workers as a party would remain and participate in the 2024 elections to the Seimas. According to his estimates, there are now about 4,000 in the party. members.

The group now has 11 members.

The two party candidates who made it to the second round had to face representatives of the Conservatives and did it differently. Interior Minister R. Tamašunienė (57%) defeated opponent Justas Džiugelis (43%), and Romualda Poševeckaja (36.39%) lost to Monika Navickienė (63.61%).

After the election, the leader of the first round of the party, Valdemar Tomaševskis, said that he would take responsibility for the failed performance in the elections, but doubted the party would accept his resignation.

They have appealed to the Central Election Commission with a request to have the results of the Seimas elections declared invalid in a multi-member constituency. The party claims that the law on Seimas elections was seriously violated due to Laisv’s television campaign against the party leader and the party.

In the Supreme-Restorative Council of the Seimas in 1990-1992, the Polish faction consisted of 8 parliamentarians. After that, the same number of Seimas members were in the LLRA-KŠS faction in the terms of 2012-2016 and 2016-2020. In 1992-1996, four parliamentarians worked in the faction of the Polish Lithuanian Union, in 2008-2012 this political force had three terms, in 2000-2008 – two, and in 1996-2000 – one.

During the period 1996-2012, the party did not form a faction.

The group now has eight members.

V. Tomaševskis was elected to the Seimas for two terms, in 2000-2008, and has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009.

He has been the director of LLRA-KŠS since 1999.
