At the presentation on Friday, Mindaugas Čiakas, Managing Director of Smiltynės Perkėla AB, was pleased that a new ferry is being built here in Klaip inherit, at the West Baltic Shipyard.
The company now has five ferries running in the Curonian Lagoon. The oldest of these, the “Kintai” ferry, has been operating for 44 years. It will be replaced by the new ferry. Other ferries are younger, between 10 and 14 years old. They are ready to go for at least another decade.
The new ferry will be more spacious than its “brothers”. Currently, cargo ferries can carry five buses, about 33 cars, 350 passengers. Nida, which carries passengers alone, can accommodate up to 700 passengers, and during peak hours not all tourists can fit on it, and they have to wait for another ferry.

According to M. Čiakas, the task of the ferry builders was formed so that the new ferry could accommodate eight buses and up to 600 passengers. This was requested by tourism companies that transport tourists arriving at the Curonian Spit on cruises. If the shuttle operated in the North Cape, where pedestrians alone could carry around 1,000 passengers.
“The new ferry is visually larger, but it cannot be highlighted because it works on the shooter principle. Two ferries travel on one side, two on the other, on the street they change. If it explodes, the algorithm would mix such a ferry It would carry the unloading and the loading. It must be the same size, “explained M. Čiakas.
According to him, the new and more modern ferry of the entire company fleet will improve communication with the Neringa peninsula and reduce those unpopular queues.

M.Čiakas jokes that just like his parents are waiting for a baby to come into the world and pick up a name for him, the “Smiltynės perkėlos” team put together a name for a new member, and realizing that it is a difficult task , addressed the public. People suggested about a hundred names that were submitted to the company directory.
According to the manager, the obvious leader emerged immediately. This is the name of the city, which is also suitable for the ferry, which will be called “Klaipeda”.
The mayor of the city, Vytautas Grubliauskas, was satisfied with this idea, recalling that until now the ferry had ships called “Kintai”, “Palanga”, “Nida” and others, but there was no name for the port city.
“It is a kind of restoration of historical truth. Klaipeda’s accent was desirable. The choice is very correct. It is an honor for the city and I wish the new ferry to be a hospital cover for Klaipeda, where everyone will feel the aura and the opportunity to travel, “said the mayor.
Arnoldas Šileika, head of the Vakarų laivų gamykla ferry company, said this is a very honorable obligation and commitment to the company, a tribute to Klaipėda.
“Building a modern ferry, which would be part of Klaipeda’s business card, would represent Klaipeda, would be pleasant for passengers. This is the most important project because all the evaluators are here. We want evaluations to be the best, the ferry will serve people for a long time and make Klaipeda residents and guests happy, “said A. Šileika.
A new building will emerge
Already next spring, work will begin on the New Ferry, where the company’s administrative building is located. The building in a state of emergency will be demolished, and in a couple of years a new, modern glass building will be erected in its place that, like a mirror, will reflect water and reflect itself.
Klaipeda residents and guests will have another opportunity to look up and closer to the Curonian Lagoon, and on the terrace of the building to enjoy the wonderful views, fragrant coffee and waves towards the departing ships.

The designers of the building did not hide the fact that it was a challenge, but the place itself is extremely inspiring, making the building like a barrier, a front door that allows images and passengers to the other shore.
“The elegant architecture of the building will harmonize harmoniously with the environment, the lagoon, the Curonian Spit, will become a new center of attraction, no less than the Old Ferry building,” said the mayor.
