Skvernell warns supermarkets: this week is critical, if no action is taken

“This week, as many experts have already mentioned, is a critical turning point. If we see that it has not worked, there are likely some areas that need to be regulated more strictly.

Where there is a mass gathering. Today, we see a large crowd of people in leisure centers, the so-called shopping and entertainment centers.

If they do not take real measures in the coming days to guarantee the security requirement, to regulate the flows, then decisions will have to be made there.

Let’s not guess what those shapes might be. We just need to find solutions so that these massive gatherings of people are not what they are today. I understand, that period, but we still have to be careful, “said S. Skvernelis.

Tomorrow it will be clear how long the quarantine will extend.

According to S. Skvernel, the extension of the quarantine will be decided on Wednesday at a government meeting.

“It just came to our attention then. Tomorrow there will be a government meeting and during the meeting we will hear what the decisions will be and what time frame should be extended further,” said S. Skvernelis.

When asked what the deadline might be, S. Skvernel replied that he was smart.

“Smart term. It would be prudent to receive the recommendation of specialists and experts”, said S. Skvernelis.

We recall that on Monday, Acting Minister of Health Aurelijus Veryga said that it had been decided that it would be proposed that the quarantine continue until mid-December, no new conditions were provided.

As he said, the original proposal was to extend the quarantine until December 31, but, as decided by the Covid-19 Management Committee, it was agreed to extend it for a shorter period.

“On Wednesday, the government will be offered to continue it until December 16 and 17. Therefore, an extension for a shorter period than the one proposed. Afterwards, the new government would decide whether or not to extend the quarantine. No changes have been discussed. special conditions under quarantine, “he said.

Veryga: Decisions are also planned for supermarkets next week

At the same time, Ms. Veryga emphasized that next week will be critical. At the same time, he informed that if the situation does not change and worsens, decisions are scheduled to be taken next week on restricting the work of supermarkets.

“It just came to our notice then, albeit at a slower rate than last week. Based on the scientists’ predictions, we should have peaked at this point, which we should have reached 2,300 to 2,400 cases a day, and we have a similar number.

If the quarantine works, perhaps we should see a slightly different dynamic, perhaps a decrease, at the end of the week. This week will be critical, showing how the situation is changing.

Because what we are seeing from other countries that have applied the quarantine, Ireland, Israel, was the third week, when it was possible to assess how the situation is changing, ”said A. Veryga.

Decide on the work of supermarkets.

Veryga also said there were discussions about compliance with quarantine requirements and possible restrictions at supermarkets in the future.

As he stressed, it was decided to communicate very clearly, speak with the Association of Commercial Companies, clearly demand that entrepreneurs, supermarket owners make sure that people do not gather there, etc.

“If we observe that the situation does not change this week, next week the government is determined to make decisions on restricting the activities of supermarkets, as has been done in Latvia,” the acting minister said on Monday.
