Skvernell is shocked by rumors of a state of emergency: now his record has changed

The president of the ruling Conservatives, Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, says the Seimas could declare a state of emergency in Lithuania if the public did not comply with the quarantine conditions imposed by the government to control the spread of the coronavirus.

“If it were decided, or more precisely, if there was a need, if the numbers did not fall and the public did not understand that the situation should be taken seriously, then the Seimas would be asked to impose additional restrictions on the Seimas,” Landsbergis said in an interview with BNS.

He said the government was currently calling for a benevolent understanding from the people to limit contacts and slow the spread of the virus, as the health care system could soon overheat, but if that weren’t enough, the emergency would allow for stricter controls on the human movements.

“I think it will be necessary to consider this issue, if necessary, due to the state of emergency. Now, however, I hope that the restrictions that have been put in place will achieve the result and that the number of infections and deaths will decrease. We will see very soon if these measures have worked, ”Seimas President Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen told reporters meeting in parliament on Thursday.

Former Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis is surprised by such words from the rulers.

“Let’s see what the sayings were in October. Ms. Aušrinė Armonaitė, when we close the bars in Vilnius, discos. He said there is nothing to do, there is no need for punitive measures. People need to be educated. <...> Now somehow the plate has changed. We need to ask them when they were sincere, then or now, ”said S. Skvernelis.

According to him, the politicization of the current leaders in the opposition and the criticism of the peasant cabinet regarding the management of the coronavirus have raised doubts among people about whether strict restrictions are really needed or whether the virus is really that dangerous.

According to S. Skvernel, the Conservatives are now in control of the situation themselves and are speaking with the same arguments that his government used. According to him, the politics of conservatives and liberals have distracted our society and many people have a sense of freedom and a sense of danger.

“If the people themselves do not understand and do not want to, neither the curfew nor the strictest police methods will do any good,” Skvernelis is convinced.

A stricter quarantine regime went into effect in Lithuania on Wednesday, during which many shops, hair salons were closed and the movement of people restricted.
