“I don’t want to politicize any pill, pill, vaccine or vaccine. If the European Medicines Agency registers a medicine, no matter where it is manufactured, or registers a vaccine that is effective and efficient, it will save the life of Lithuanians, then I think the decision of the European Union will be the same if we see the lack. of vaccination in volume those vaccines, ”S. Skvernelis told Knowledge Radio.

“It is important that the vaccine is recognized in accordance with the legislation of the European Union, that it is truly appropriate, safe and effective. And it doesn’t matter where it’s done, “he added.

The former prime minister believes that the idea that the purchase of the Spunik V vaccine would support the anti-democratic Russian regime is wrong. According to him, according to such logic, all trade relations with Russia should generally be terminated.

“If we look at that prism right away, then we shouldn’t have any commercial relationship with those states at all, it certainly won’t be. And more importantly, we need to look closely at how much those manufacturers are involved in the regime. We know very well that We have information from the service that there are individual companies involved in the regime that are directly financed, ”said the politician.

“If such information were that the manufacturer of the vaccine directly finances the regimen and that is the main objective, it is a solution. But if we only look at the fact that the money will go to one state or another in general, and as a result we can sacrifice the lives and health of our people, it would certainly be a reckless attitude ”, he also emphasized.

However, S. Skvernelis hopes that the vaccine manufacturers with whom Lithuania has signed a contract will deliver the required quantity of vaccines and that Lithuania will not have to think and consider Sputnik V.

ELTA recalls that the Presidency, like the Government, is skeptical about the possibility of using Sputnik V vaccines produced in Russia in Lithuania. According to Asta Skaisgirytė, the country’s top adviser, Lithuania has decided to buy Western vaccines, even if the vaccines made in Russia have been approved by the European Medicines Agency.

For her part, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė affirms that Lithuania, having participated in the joint procurement of COVID-19 vaccines from the European Union (EU), has obtained the required quantity of vaccines. Therefore, according to the Prime Minister, it is not even necessary to consider the acquisition of the Russian vaccine “Sputnik V”. His position also has the support of Chancellor Gabriel Lamdsberg.

Meanwhile, Vytenis Andriukaitis, a social democrat and special envoy of the World Health Organization (WHO) to the European region, thinks otherwise. According to him, the issue of purchasing COVID-19 vaccines should not be politicized, therefore, he points out that as many safe vaccines as possible should be used, not excluding Sputnik V vaccines produced in Russia.
