“We are proud to be partners of the Hockey World Championship for 28 years. However, we respect and support human rights. Therefore, Škoda will not support the 2021 Hockey World Championship, if Belarus is allowed to host the event ”, announced on Twitter the Volkswagen group, owner of Škoda.

The automaker Škoda, which has been funding the hockey championships as the main official sponsor since 1993 and is also the main sponsor of the Tour de France cycling race, sold more than a million cars last year.

The decision on the championship can be made from January 25 to 26, when the Council of the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) will meet.

If nothing changes, the championship will take place in Belarus and Latvia in May and June. The latter has already stated that he does not want Belarus to contribute to the event.

Earlier this week, IIHF chief René Fasel visited Minsk, where Alexander Lukashenko urged him to resist mounting pressure to relocate the championship.

Earlier, Czech Foreign Minister Tom Petrichek said it was unimaginable that the championship could take place in Belarus, as this would “legitimize this repressive regime.”
