“I completely understand why so many people are lining up to apply for the Seimas. The only question for me is why so few people who really have the right experience and expertise want to go there, the most important question for me here.
And when it comes to the tenure of a member of the Seimas, it is a status, certainly not such a difficult job, if it goes down the list and you can afford to be less visible and less profound questions. And, of course, the members of the Seimas decide how we are going to live and there is a very great interest and large business groups, other interest groups to have their representatives there ”, said S. Malinauskas at the fair.
He stated that in political debates it is even difficult to understand what they promise to Lithuania.
“Watching today’s electoral debate, when the parties elected to the Seimas debate, sending them parliamentarians, gives the impression that we are hearing the same things over and over again. And it is very difficult to understand what specific agenda awaits us, ”said S. Malinauskas in the program.
The journalist said some are rushing to parliament for salaries and status.
“Sometimes it seems that there are several extremes: the status of the people who come there and because of a sufficiently high salary. And there are some people, party leaders, who are very rich, influential, they do not solve any property problem, their income of other activities are high. But we hear them say all the time: we take care of ourselves, now we come to take care of the rest, “said the former adviser to the Prime Minister.
He stated that working at the Seimas requires a lot of specific knowledge, experience and understanding. There are such parliamentarians, according to the interlocutor of the news radio. But not all.
“But very often in Lithuania it is imagined that it is the job of a member of the Seimas to come to the Seimas sessions several times a week, to raise their hand as agreed beforehand in the faction. And that is enough. Then you feel significant and you don’t even go deep into what is happening around you, ”said S. Malinauskas.
The journalist ironic that politicians often understand themselves only as people who do well at campus festivals and distribute coloring books to children.
“Once upon a time I had to work on the presidential election campaign, there it was explained what kind of president one wanted. Of course this is a slightly different specificity, he is not a member of the Seimas, but I think the thinking is very similar. So people react very carefully to those who are smarter than they are, speaking incomprehensible things. Voters identify with those whose value levels match ours. Therefore, in the provinces, candidates, intellectuals and scientists are rarely elected.
Single-person workers often mean they have a strong presence in the local community, a municipal employee, a farmer, a local businessman. And here is the biggest problem: we have an approach to politics as a good and communicative person who appears on rural and urban holidays and gives books to rural children, ”said S. Malinauskas on the news radio program.
Cars with headlights are fascinating too
Professor Ramūnas Vilpišauskas from the Vilnius University Institute of International Relations and Political Science (VU TSPMI) said on the show that people are drawn to power for various reasons.
“I would like to highlight a few things: if you manage to win the election, there is at least some stability for the term, unless you do something wrong and illegal, along with some income, that some people also find attractive.” (…) Besides this stability, for some it is a way of trying to change something in the country. I don’t think there are one or two. I know a lot about myself whose sincere wishes I do not doubt. Of course, there are also those who have a significant sense of power, ”said the VU TSPMI professor.
He said that a sudden sense of power can also turn your head and make you think that an important politician will be one for the rest of your life.
“The power that, with binding decisions, laws, legal acts, also stuns some in some way. Even the attributes that accompany them – cars with beacons, some of which, for the first time in politics, also turn their heads – feel very important and they think that is how it will be for the rest of their lives, “said the interlocutor of the program.
