Šimonytė: I think some flexibility can be expected in vaccination against AstraZeneca

On Tuesday, Health Minister A. Dulkys temporarily suspended vaccination with AstraZeneca against the coronavirus vaccine, taking into account the IWT recommendation.

I. Šimonytė stated that some flexibility can already be expected.

“I don’t think we are at the stage where we can vaccinate everyone who comes in and wants to. Because there are still many people at risk who are not vaccinated. (…) But we can expect some flexibility in the use of this vaccine, ”I. Šimonytė said Wednesday.

Prime Minister I. Šimonytė stated that even before this weekend it was noticed that AstraZeneca vaccines were accumulating in warehouses. According to her, this could have been caused by discussions in the public space.

According to the Prime Minister, the government has been criticized in several cases, including suspending vaccination against AstraZeneca until the recommendation of the Medicines Control Agency.

“Until the decision was made, the government received so much criticism for not making this decision, especially considering that many states have made such a decision,” said I. Šimonytė.

He did not hide the belief that tomorrow we will receive another guarantee from the European Medicines Agency that the AstraZeneca vaccine is safe.

Šimonytė: I think some flexibility can be expected in vaccination against AstraZeneca

“I was convinced that there was no basis for such a decision and now I believe that tomorrow the European Medicines Agency will probably repeat what it has said more than once: that it cannot establish any causal link between any health problems or even deaths and AstraZeneca” . vaccination or whatever. although another registered vaccine “, – noted I. Šimonytė.

The prime minister, however, acknowledged that the stocks of this vaccine are accumulating in some municipalities because some people tend to trust their beliefs more than the arguments of scientists.

“There are certain beliefs that are very difficult to refute, even when scientists deny them, people with qualifications, reputation, workmanship and many years of practice, that all vaccines are safe,” said the head of government.

I. Šimonytė also emphasized that there may be changes in the use of AstraZeneca.

“Some municipalities are very successful in using all vaccines. It is obvious that the strategy of redistribution of quantities will also have to be rethought,” said the Prime Minister.

The list of municipalities is subject to change.

The Prime Minister also assured that the list of municipalities where movement restrictions continue to be applied may change.

“We have municipalities where the number of cases is high enough and we still suspect a widespread British strain. At the end of this week, there should not be completely accurate but sufficiently well indicated survey data. Then we will see it more precisely. It is possible that in the course of that list of municipalities it will change if the epidemiological situation there changes. He is not guilty, ”said the Prime Minister.

He said the government could review the list of municipalities next week, which might not be the case if the situation does not change.

What went wrong?

I. Šimonytė stated at the press conference that what she wanted could not be achieved within 100 working days after the Government.

“We wanted the epidemiological situation to improve through these 100 so much that we could only handle the situation through local means or point by point. Now it is clear that the variant of the virus, which was observed in Europe before the New Year, which has already reached Lithuania, greatly complicates the improvement of the situation. Therefore, any step is reminiscent of walking on ice that can be broken. Today’s decision to return the majority of primary school children to educational institutions is also related to that risk, ”said I. Šimonytė.

“We understand very well how difficult it is for the little ones to learn at a distance, we have run that risk,” said the head of government.

He hinted that some decisions may need to be made “in the opposite direction.”

The scope of the cumulative investigation of the method will be expanded

When asked whether the laboratory capacity to test cumulative methods will be expanded, I. Šimonytė responded positively. According to her, this requires human capacity and certain information technology solutions.

“The integration between the information systems is underway. I hope it takes a couple of weeks, that it is possible to have at least functional solutions after the Easter holidays,” said the Prime Minister.

According to her, the method itself is very effective “both in terms of time, cost and public benefit.”

“We are really determined to develop it,” said I. Šimonytė.

He explained that there are also plans to expand the range of laboratories that can analyze samples from this method.

“They (cumulative method tests – aut.p.) are effective not only in education, but they could also be effective in other larger groups, for example, in larger companies or anywhere else where there are many people around. same time, “I Šimonytė pointed out.
