As early as Tuesday, it was announced that the Vilnius region is becoming a nationwide problem due to deteriorating coronavirus morbidity rates and needs additional attention. Experts and the government are considering that perhaps a strict quarantine should be introduced not at the national but at the local level.

It is noted that the regions of Lithuania, where the British strain of the virus (B.1.1.7) predominates, lead both in terms of the number of cases and hospitalizations in the country, and since last Monday, the number of cases. in Vilnius county it was 54%. the number of all cases in Lithuania and the number of cases detected since February has doubled.

In general, the situation in eastern Lithuania is deteriorating very rapidly: the 7-day average of new cases in Vilnius city and district has doubled per month and the rate continues to grow. The number of patients treated in both hospitalization and resuscitation is growing in hospitals in the Vilnius region, and additional beds are being added.

R. Šimašius admitted that everyone sees that the situation is not easy.

“Unfortunately the public health center should probably give that answer, I don’t have it yet. Of course, the answer may be more than other cities are testing. It may also be related to the spread of the British virus.”

According to him, it is easy to say that Vilnius is a problem, but the number of vaccines is the lowest the capital receives.

“The number of vaccines is the lowest in Lithuania. If the situation is more complicated, it is necessary to administer more vaccines, we are using them faster. (…) We do not have major problems with people who refuse to be vaccinated, to less than in New Vilnius, where fewer people want to be vaccinated. It is a challenge for us to vaccinate the larger groups, especially those who work in a contact way.

For example, he says, the police, children’s rights, so it is natural that Vilnius wants to receive enough vaccines to vaccinate these people.

“For now, there could be a little more justice in this place.”

According to him, all other big cities receive more vaccines than Vilnius. Therefore, it is natural that these vaccines need much more.
