On Thursday, the Mayor of Vilnius, R. Šimašius, met with Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyte. According to the mayor, the issues of the pandemic were also discussed, one of them was the mass vaccination of the city’s residents. According to him, the city is ready for it, only the vaccine itself is missing.
“The only limitation that prevents more vaccinations is the lack of vaccines. {…} We are ready to increase the volume of vaccinations several times. So far, four polyclinics are ready, the vaccines are going well for them, ”R. Šimašius told reporters.
According to the mayor, 5 thousand people could be vaccinated in Vilnius. people per day, if necessary, the volume could be increased to tens of thousands. Mass vaccination centers are not yet being considered.
“We believe that these four outpatient clinics are the right place and space for the moment. {…} This is not a problem of where to get vaccinated. People have health facilities and can get vaccinated normally there. If we see that there is a need, we will look for other places.
There are also some very interesting initiatives: a third century university says that if we vaccinate the elderly, they might want to volunteer and vaccinate there. Perhaps we will use practical initiatives of this kind, “said R. Šimašius.
At the moment, it is also being decided how to deal with teachers in the capital who will not accept to be vaccinated.
“I’m very happy that we have those considerations and they lead to practical decisions. {…} There are a variety of considerations, ranging from how teachers appear in the vaccination queue to how you get back to contact teaching. Also with the right to perform a certain job if you are not vaccinated.
Legal measures are needed. “… We really have to respect the rights of each person, but we must respect them so that they do not restrict others,” said the mayor.
The Vilnius City Municipality is still awaiting instructions from the Ministry of Health (SAM) on the further sequence of vaccinations.
