“In autumn, we are confident in the knowledge that the second wave of coronavirus is inevitable and will undoubtedly affect both the life of Vilnius and the work of the municipality.

It was only a matter of time, so we were preparing for that: we approved the action plan, how we will react when we have the first case of COVID-19 in our team. This weekend, the plan had to be activated: the first municipal employee was confirmed to have a positive coronavirus test, ”writes R. Šimašius.

The mayor also criticized the National Public Health Center, which reported the case to the municipality immediately, but is closed on weekends.

“The information was quickly relayed to the NVSC. Only on weekends, with the number of infections in the country that continues to increase, the center is closed; I hope to react sooner or later. It would be better sooner, of course. We work the weekend ourselves: disinfection was done both in the office and in the common areas and elevators.

It is already known that the employee did not have many contacts, after assessing the situation responsibly, he isolated himself and immediately informed the managers about the results of the investigation. A possible circle is also established, I myself had no contact with this employee. Department staff were also contacted to reorient work remotely in the near future.

I invite not only municipal employees, to whom I already sent this message in a letter sent in the morning, but also the heads of companies, institutions and establishments located in Vilnius to promote telework as much as possible; Let’s do everything we can to make our employees feel safe at work. No less important is the non-stigmatization of these cases and the support or assistance to employees ”, says R. Šimašius.

He also called on the people of Vilnius to follow all hygiene rules.

“The concentration, patience and responsible attitude of all helped us to successfully withstand the first wave of COVID-19, we even believed that we could overcome it all in Vilnius! Once again, we must act together, let’s show that our determination, perseverance and creativity turn even the most difficult challenges not only into lessons learned, but also into our strength.
