Schools are currently facing many problems that they are trying to solve in every possible way. Parents blame their leaders and educators for caring about their children. Both students and teachers are under tremendous stress. Such a situation in Klaipėda S. Dach progymnasium did not arise from a good life and did not really follow the modern winds to level the genre, etc., but due to the circumstances dictated by the pandemic situation.
The school didn’t hurt a thing
Laima Prižgintienė, Director of the Department of Education of the Klaipėda City Municipal Administration, states that the Klaipėda S. Dach school did not damage anything and is not the only school in Lithuania where such a method is temporarily chosen to control the spread of COVID. 19.
“In the first place, I consider that it is about the implementation of the recommendations of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports and the National Center for Public Health. Last year, in the case of Kovido, this method was used in many schools in the Republic. It is not invented by the S. Dach school administration.
We do not have that information on how many schools in Klaipeda have shared bathrooms. Nobody in the city raised that problem anymore. The principal of the Klaipėda S. Dach school is obliged to explain the situation and the measures that have been taken so that the child, both the boy and the girl, feel safe in the bathroom, ”L. Prizgintienė told the Western Express.
According to her, this issue has been discussed several times with school leaders. The head of the Klaipeda Municipality Department of Education says there may be a problem right now, but it really needs to be solved.
“I did not believe, he said:” It can not be “
“I want to make public the incomprehensible situation at S. Dach’s school (I think this school is not the only one). Due to the fighting, the schools are widely separated. I understand and agree, but it is shocking to have formed shared girls and boys restrooms with urinals and keyless toilets with toilets. For me, this is a mind-blowing solution!
The director said she had received permission to install shared bathrooms because she met the requirements of the fight. When asked to teach my son remotely, he said it was not possible because contact learning was happening right now. I try to find a way to help my son, but I also worry about other children, they can be very harmed.
I decided to go through the public because what we consider values, morality, morality could be crushed.
I called the Klaipeda education department. I spoke of shared bathrooms. The counselor did not believe, he said: It cannot be! He promised to find out and report it. Then he called again and said that the school had all the permits for that, and that the urinals were separated by walls (only that they were separated by walls so that the children could not see each other in the urinal, and that when the cabin left the girl I could see the boy’s butt, etc.). He also asked me if the urinals weren’t covered so the kids wouldn’t use them and if there were really no hooks in the stalls. I hastily said that if the bathrooms were shared, I wouldn’t let my son go to this school, let’s go somewhere else. He said do not rush to take such action. He promised to report what he will decide.
One of my son’s classmates found the law. The school is based on the 2021 State of Emergency Operations Manual. June 30 by decision no. V-1552. He made the decision to assign the bathrooms to the students of a specific class (group, stream) without dividing them by gender ”, reads the letter from the mother, whose last name we do not reveal, to the editorial board.
It is necessary to separate the flows of students
Daiva Marozienė, director of S. Dach Progymnasium, told the Western Express that this decision was made because of the need to control the flow of students. According to the director, the operations manager allowed the realization of shared bathrooms in the school infrastructure and in this case his recommendations were not violated.
There is one bathroom on each floor of the S. Dach Progymnasium building: the first for boys, the second for girls, the third for boys, and the fourth for girls. If students were allowed to walk freely in the restrooms as before, the flows would be out of control.
The flows are also controlled in the canteen: only that so-called bubble is going to eat at a time. As a result, there are now no more than four lunch breaks.
Also, at S.Dach’s school, children study at different times. For example, elementary school students do not meet with elementary school children, students in grades 5-8. A break for the little ones, a lesson for the older ones.
“The decisions of the operations manager have severely limited us and we are trying to implement them. The shared bathrooms are a temporary solution for us and we do not say it is eternal. We try to do our best. As a manager, I am responsible for managing the flows. The school is very large, there are almost 1,000 students without three, and the building is just that. We sit down with the entire administration team and look for the best solutions, “explained the director.
According to her, already last year an attempt was made to apply this solution, thus managing flows, when only beginners were going to study. So there was no big problem.
Urinals are not available
According to director D.Marozienė, the bathroom cubicles are locked, so it has not been thought that such a problem could arise. “Now we’ve ‘closed’ all the urinals, wrapped them up, and wrote that they don’t work.” It is no longer possible to use them, “he said.
According to the director, the educators were interviewed at the progymnasium yesterday morning and their responses did not seem to indicate that anyone had a problem with the shared bathrooms. “We respond to comments. Now we have agreed that for some time both the teachers and the principals will wake up, we are already divided, we will see that once the girls leave, the next, the boys. The height of the cabins themselves is higher than the height of a person, there are partitions and they are locked ”, assured the director.
He reported that it had been agreed to meet and speak with the mother who wrote the letter. It was supposed to happen yesterday.
No more escaping from a sinking ship
D. Marachienė, the principal of S. Dach’s school, tried to draw attention to the difficult situation the teachers now find themselves in. Among other things, they also have to teach children. “It just came to our attention then. Where can a manager find both human resources?
You can’t imagine how many decisions we had to make and how much things have changed since the combat situation began, not to mention the distance learning challenges that needed to be overcome as well. By the way, we also received very good feedback from parents, because the training was always with us. We, the leaders, are considering which of us would now agree to take on that job. What we will do, we have chosen before and now we are not fleeing from a sinking ship, but trying to solve problems ”, explained D. Marozienė.
“It would be uncomfortable for us”
The interviewed student psychologist, who has been working in this work since 1999, presented only her own considerations as a person and not as a psychologist, since she had not encountered such a thing. “Let’s think from the other side. Would it be easy for you to go to the men’s room? Men wouldn’t go to the ladies’ room so easily anyway, either, unless they were in big trouble. We adults would not do that and it would be uncomfortable for us to have such an arrangement in place. Of course, perhaps over time, people would get used to it or find some other way out.
I don’t know if it is possible to demand of children what adults are unlikely to want to do.
I don’t know if it would really hurt children, but I imagine that it would really cause negative emotions, inconvenience, inconvenience. Perhaps for some it would be a trauma, because children are so different. I can’t say anything about the psychological consequences because I haven’t seen any research on how children react to shared bathroom facilities. This is really unusual when someone would have a really bad time and really experience a lot of negative emotions. I have no scientific basis to comment on such a situation. A question like this was never asked, because it was always evident that the bathrooms were separate, ”said the interviewer.
