Relocating the last migrants: an attempt to dig a tunnel

Most of the 740 single men living in Rūdninkai are already moving into new temporary houses in Kybartai. Around a hundred more illegal immigrants will join them on Friday afternoon; the last buses left the Rūdninkai landfill around noon.

“It just came to our knowledge then. They are all single men. From Monday this week until now, when the last bus left, they were all transferred to Kybartai,” said Renaldas Žekonis, the camp manager established at the Rūdninkai landfill.

According to him, the relocation of illegal immigrants could not be prevented. A couple of days ago, several migrants tried to get out of the Rūdninkai landfill by digging a tunnel under the fence, but officers guarding the area were spotted.

“There was an attempt last night to leave the camp. There was an attempt to tunnel from a tent on the side of the camp through a protective fence. But if there was not enough time or forces, officials saw and the attempt was prevented. leave “, assured R. Žekonis.

The administrator of the camp set up at the Rūdninkai landfill explained that the length of the tunnel was sufficient to “get out of the reeds instead of the studs.”

“I think up to 10 meters underground. There was another half way to go. If there was a desire to get through the secondary fence, it was only halfway through, ”he calculated.

R.Žekonis said officers managed to find out which residents of the camp tried to dig a tunnel. What are the penalties? After all, this is not a prison, this is a camp, ”the camp administrator replied to the question of whether the migrants who tried to escape would receive any punishment.

When the migrants left the Rūdninkai camp, not only was a lot of garbage dumped, but the tents were also dismantled. When asked if the tents were pulled down by the migrants themselves, R. Žekonis indicated that when the officers found the excavated tunnel, the nearby tents were dismantled for security reasons.

According to the camp administrator, most of the migrants voluntarily agreed to move to Kybartai. People living in tents in the worst conditions were first relocated.

However, some migrants were not fascinated by the idea of new homes: while they were being moved, they hid in tents, ran from one store to another and asked to be moved later, the next day. Such requests are believed to have stemmed from plans to continue excavation work on the tunnel.

There are no incidents or complaints

He did not hide the fact that working with illegal immigrants was a real challenge for him and other workers, but he managed to get along: “The camp was quiet, there were no incidents or complaints. Everyone, as you can see, was happy under better conditions. “

Right, the portal 15min.lt previously reported that a caste system was forming in the Rūdninkai migrant camp, that sexual exploitation was taking place and that some poor migrants were being forced into prostitution.

“I will not confirm any of these facts because all the complaints we receive have been registered. For every complaint we received, whether it was me or the officials, we called the police. And there were only two such cases, one due to a robbery and the other due to a health disorder. In both cases, a pre-trial investigation was launched, ”taught R. Žekonis.

When the weather was cold and the winter season was approaching, the Ministry of the Interior (MIA) tried to attend to the migrants housed in the Rūdninkai camp as soon as possible, as the conditions here are probably the worst of all temporary accommodation. for migrants. in Lithuania.

The Interior Ministry declares that Rūdninkai will remain a reserve place where, if necessary, that is, if the number of migrants suddenly increases, a modular house camp would be set up.

Located in Kybartai

On Monday, the sign on the door of the former Kybartai correctional facility was symbolically changed: the Alien Registration Center was opened. Hundreds of convicts have been replaced here by hundreds of illegal immigrants. The former residents of these houses were transferred to the Marijampolė penitentiary and other prisons.

Migrants housed at the Kybartai Alien Registration Center are divided into sectors according to nationality to avoid conflicts. They can move freely within the center only in their own sector or at certain times at specific times.

The Kybartai Alien Registration Center is said to provide heating, electricity, Internet connection, hot water and food, and a medical center. There are also leisure facilities: a library, a craft center, a gym, and in the open area of the prison you can practice sports at the football stadium and basketball courts.

Illegal immigrants are protected by SBGS and Public Safety Service (VST) officials. It is estimated that between 10 and 15 civil servants will be on duty in the territory at the same time, in addition to social workers working. The area is surrounded by a barbed wire fence.

Establish centralized accommodation centers for migrants.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, according to the migrant accommodation plan, several centralized migrant accommodation centers will be established, adapted to different needs.

All migrants will be moved to heated or insulated buildings and heated modular homes by October from border barriers, temporarily provided buildings in municipal areas and tent camps.

There are currently 446 migrants at the border barriers, but none of them live in tents. Different groups of migrants are accommodated in modular houses located in the territories of the Medininkai Border Guard School and the Pabradė Alien Accommodation Center.

Currently, the most socially vulnerable groups, that is, families with young children, pregnant women, people with disabilities, are in Rukla, the building of the Refugee Reception Center and the modular hut camp, which is expected to open next week at the Naujininkai hostel in Vilnius.
