To allow Lithuanians to participate in the selection of astronauts, the leader of the Freedom Party asked the Seimas to ratify the relevant agreement as soon as possible, which would allow Lithuania to become a member of the European Space Agency. After all, the astronaut selection is ongoing: “We want to create that window of opportunity for Lithuanian citizens to participate in such selection.”
The opposition seemed to react with derision.
“Yesterday we had hearings in the Health Commission just about the legalization of drugs and psychotropic substances, first the theoretical part, then the practical part, then the Freedom Party gave the herb to whom the gunpowder, and then it says: now let’s go into space and whoever goes through that course can be an astronaut ”, says Remigijus Žemaitaitis, a member of the mixed group Seimas.
Opposition leader Saulius Skvernelis agrees: “This is a matter of national importance, essential and most important in the country at the moment, because there are probably an infinite number of people who want to become astronauts in Lithuania.”
Many people may want to go into space, but the chances of passing the selection are particularly slim. The Seimas is already debating what should be sent from space to MPs first.
Algirdas Sys, the eldest of the Social Democratic Group, proposes to send an already distinguished Seimas: “Since Petras Gražulis will fly, I suggest you first. Because he knows how to jump, he maintains a state of weightlessness. “
P. Gražulis agrees: “Not, what you gonna do, tie up, throw in that spaceship and I’ll have to fly. “
And the peasants published a photo in which someone had already portrayed them as astronauts. So it’s ironic that they could volunteer to fulfill their childhood dreams.
Agnė Širinskienė says: “We passed the selection in 2017, when that cartoon appeared, we all have three heroes, it doesn’t really offend, it’s a lot of fun to make fun of him sometimes, but realistically I think maybe the Freedom Party is a little too far behind the Sun it flew out of the system. “
Who should fly into space was even discussed in the Seimas, it is true that A. Armonaitė explained that the peasants no longer have any chance.
“I really understand that, like TikToke, there are no other problems in the state. I would like to wish the Minister of Finance to land a little more on the ground and start dealing with more earthly things,” says A. Širinskienė.
And while the opposition says it understands the importance of providing new opportunities for science and business, it is outraged by A. Armonaitė’s request to consider the issue at the Seimas with particular urgency. This is desirable because the astronaut selection is underway at the end of the month, but the opposition feels that more urgency is needed to rescue bankrupt companies than to find astronauts.
“Today is probably not the most important issue for our people, the country’s economy, to be in such a strange way. As long as you can’t prove anything else in government, it’s up to you to address that issue, “says opposition leader S. Skvernelis.
“Armonaitė becomes a kind of” Beautiful 2 “. If Gražulis participates in one company, Armonaitė now participates in Gražulis 2 in another company. And if they got together on a boat, they would play fantastic in terms of public relations. Here’s a fact , and if not, they could participate in Eurovision like LT United., Gražulis and Armonaitė would be an incredible pair ”, says R. Žemaitaitis.
However, A. Armonaitė has his own arguments: “There is a business rescue agenda and there is an economic growth agenda. This is on the growth agenda. “
Laughter, but in 2019, the Ministry of Economy and Innovation established the Lithuanian Space Office. Lithuanian students are doing internships at NASA and entrepreneurs are already developing some components used in space with scientists: lasers, applications, earth observation equipment.
Eglė Elena Šataitė, Head of the Space Office, says: “The space community, in general, has several dozen companies in Lithuania that are active in international projects, and not only the European Space Agency, but also the European Union, Horizon 2020 , “Program” Eurostars.
Lithuania is now a cooperating state, costing almost 1.5 million a year. Becoming an associate member would cost € 3 million a year, but researchers and entrepreneurs could get involved in more ongoing projects.
“This is a relatively small tax for the state, which will bring back both universities and companies through new opportunities, these funds,” says A. Armonaitė.
E. Šataitė also sees other reasons: “First of all, it is a matter of great political prestige to join such a specific entity and generally to have the opportunity to operate in a specific space industry.”
The European Space Agency announces the public selection of astronauts for the fourth time. They were previously held in 1978, 1992 and 2008. Six of the more than 8,000 candidates were last selected. Only nationals of the association’s member states can participate in the selection.
Now there is a requirement to have a master’s degree, or be a pilot, to speak English. In addition, for the first time, a parastronaut is sought, a person with a disability.
