Secured position

With a request to clarify his position regarding A. Zakharchenko and the unrecognized “Donetsk People’s Republic”, he addressed S. Dmitrijev at ru.delfi.lt and received such a reply.

When asked if he really considers A. Zacharčenko a hero, the Lithuanian politician said: “He was officially awarded, we have to admit it.”

As ru.delfi.lt points out, A. Zacharčenko received the highest awards from the same unrecognized DLR, as well as the order issued by the unrecognized government of South Ossetia.

S. Dmitrijev also pointed out that the official position of the Republic of Lithuania regarding the conflict in Donbass is incorrect.

“Yes, I consider this position to be incorrect, because each sovereign state must solve its problems without external interference,” Dmitriev said.

In 2014, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Seimas decided that Lithuania “considers the presence of Russian armed forces and armed groups controlled by it on the territory of Ukraine to be an occupation of certain parts of the territory.” Since then, the official position of Vilnius has not changed: the Lithuanian authorities believe that the Russian Federation has committed an act of aggression against Ukraine.

In view of the upcoming national debate on foreign policy issues, it would be logical to find out whether S. Dmitrijev’s views coincide with the leading position of the party on whose list he is running for the Seimas elections. In search of the answer to these questions, the ru.delfi.lt journalists turned to the leader of the “workers” Viktoras Uspaskich, but he said that he could not appreciate the party’s words.

“Since I have not seen that comment, I cannot comment on it. I would even like to comment, but I do not know what exactly, I cannot say anything,” replied the chairman of the Labor Party.

And here, outside observers reacted critically to Mr. Dmitrijev’s statement. Speaking to ru.delfi.lt, Tomas Janeliūnas, a political scientist and professor at the Institute of International Relations and Diplomacy at Vilnius University, emphasized that it was unacceptable to call A. Zacharčenko a hero.

“I think it would be the same if someone called a hero, say, Osama bin Laden or some other terrorist and ‘honored their memory.’ Like all civilized countries, Lithuania considers fighters like A. Sakharchenko to be separatists. Ukraine generally equates them with terrorists. There are reasons for this, such as the downing of a civilian plane. Therefore, speeches like S. Dmitrijevo’s are incomprehensible ”, says the political scientist.
