Teachers didn’t go on strike this year, but that doesn’t mean everything is great in schools. The directors of the city’s schools decided to tell the mayor of Klaipėda some of the accumulated problems.
You have no money to protect yourself
Vytautas Grubliauskas contacted representatives of the Klaipėda School Leaders Association and the Teachers Union at the meeting.
As Laima Juknienė, leader of the Klaipėda City Association of the Lithuanian Education Workers’ Union, later described this meeting, the directors came to support the mayor.
One of the biggest issues they wanted to put their heart on is that schools will soon lose the necessary protection against coronavirus.
Jolita Andrijauskienė, director of the Klaipėda H. Zuderman Gymnasium, stated that disinfectant liquids are more likely to be used. Paper towels are also running out fast, which need to be changed with tumble dryers, but it also requires money.
“By law, employers must provide protective equipment to workers. The secondary school employs about 100 people. If we change medical masks every four hours, it would be difficult to understand the amounts. We are forced to ask teachers to buy them. the masks themselves. We cannot expel a forgotten child from school. We buy the equipment with money for completely different things, “said J. Andrijauskienė.
Spoke of lessons
The mayor, educators believe, needs to know the current situation. Especially since on Monday school principals planned to meet with the head of emergencies in Klaipeda and hope to talk about the same issues.
We are forced to ask teachers to buy masks.
Another problem concerns the conduct of the lessons of school leaders. It was important that managers tell them how lessons were assigned to them and agree on when they could take lessons and when they couldn’t.
The Labor Code allows principals to teach.
The mayor has formed a commission to regulate the employment of managers, so he could also address the issue of school principals.
Outraged the teacher representative
L. Juknienė was outraged by such a request from the directors. It seems to the union leader that managers want exceptional conditions compared to teachers.
“If vacancies remain, we believe they should be distributed proportionally, allowing extra money to be made not only for managers with much higher salaries, but also for teachers. There are a number of injustices here, in order to strictly separate and advertise officially when the director can accept the interested parties and work on their direct work, and when the work of the master “, – L. Juknienė did not hide.
The union leader briefly attended the meeting, but managed to get a feel for the position of the school leaders and said they were convinced they were minding their own business. They demonstrated the same position a couple of years ago, when the teachers’ strike in Klaipeda did not receive the support of the managers. Many of them were inclined not to pay wages to the participants in the strike.
However, the director of H. Zuderman Gymnasium is convinced that in many schools there is no contradiction between teachers and directors. Such a contradiction is said to be artificially scalable.
“We have asked for the mayor’s real help and we think the benefits of this conversation will be. We want them to understand us, to listen to us, to consult us, for our opinion to be important ”, J. Andrijauskien spoke about the meeting.
