Ukraine is preparing for the 30th anniversary of independence from the Soviet Union next year. The Ministry of National Defense has distributed photos of soldiers marching in a parade rehearsal, and here they wear black high heels.

“Today, for the first time, training is done in high heels,” said cadet Ivanna Medvid, quoted by the information website of the Ministry of National Defense “ArmiaInform”.

“It is a bit more difficult than in military shoes, but we are trying,” Medvid added in a comment posted Thursday.

Several Ukrainian lawmakers, close to former President Peter Poroshenko, appeared in parliament wearing pairs of shoes and urged the defense minister to wear high heels during the parade.

“It’s hard to imagine a more idiotic and harmful idea,” said Inna Sovsun, a spokeswoman for the Gola party, noting the health risks.

He also said that Ukrainian female soldiers, like men, risked their lives and “did not deserve to be ridiculed.”

Ukraine is fighting Russian-backed separatists in the country’s industrial east, a conflict in which more than 13,000 people were killed.

Parliament Deputy Speaker Olena Kondratiuk said authorities should publicly apologize for “humiliating women” and conduct an investigation.

O. Kondratiuk said that more than 13,500 women fought in the ongoing military conflict.
