“Until now, the ministry has decided to follow the safest vaccination scheme: the first batch will be used to vaccinate teachers under the age of 55,” Aistė Šuksta, spokesman for Health Minister Arūnas Dulkis, told BNS.
Minister A. Dulkys decided that the conclusion of the State Drug Control Service must still be awaited before making the final decision.
“The Authority provided an overview of the clinical trials. The Health Minister signed a mandate on Friday night to instruct the IWC to draw conclusions about the age limit for vaccination with AstraZeneca, ”he said.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) last week approved the use of AstraZeneca in all adult citizens of the European Union.
The agency has announced that there is currently insufficient research on whether the vaccine provides effective protection to people 55 and older, but experts at the EEA believe that older people can be vaccinated.
Many European countries have already made decisions about the age limit this week. Germany, France, Austria, Denmark have decided to vaccinate people under 65, Poland has set an age limit of 60, and Spain has set an age limit of 55.
The first shipment of AstraZeneca vaccines is due to arrive in Lithuania this weekend, but the minister’s representative said she could not name the exact day and number of doses.
“The first shipment is scheduled for this weekend. (…) The date has been changed several times, therefore, in order not to mislead the public, we will inform immediately when the shipment will be delivered,” said A. Šuksta.
“Our commitment is not to reveal the exact amount until it has been delivered to Lithuania,” he said.
Earlier this week, SAM announced that the first doses of the vaccine should arrive on Sunday.
Until now, Lithuanians have been vaccinated with the Pfizer – BioNTech and Moderna vaccines.
